**SMIRKING AND FLIRTACIOUS HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

Ol' Smirk, Jr. aka San Lang is the focus of this episode and WHAT an intriguing character he's shaping up to be! He's checking off all my "character I adore" boxes: 

- Quick-witted? Check.
- Mysterious and Maybe Angsty Past? Check!
- Utter Devotion and Desire to Protect Our Cinnamon Bun Deity? CHECK!!

I have my own theories about this "young man," as seemingly does Xie Lian, (we'll see what's proven right and wrong in the future) but the dynamic between them is already so wholesome and charming...I can't wait to see more of them together! :3

I refreshed my page, and I think the comment that I worked half an hour on disappeared... I'm gonna retype everything again below... *Ok, so this is the third time that my comment disappeared. I figured out this happens sometimes when I edit my comment. 三郎 San Lang means "third son (of the family generation)". This is not usually a proper name unless the person is from a very poor and uneducated family that didn't care or didn't know how to give their child an eloquent name. "郎 Lang" is also often used as a suffix by women to address their male lovers. For example, Xuan Ji calls Pei Ming "Pei Lang". You know from MDZS that people in ancient China have courtesy names in addition to given names and titles and endearments. This is because it is considered extremely rude for someone who is not a close family member to call a person by their given name. Courtesy names are used to show respect and politeness. However, sometimes using courtesy names sound too distant while using given names sounds too blunt. This is when one can choose to address a person by 郎 Lang (boy) or 娘 Niang (girl) as a suffix attached to their name (either first or last) or their ranking in their family generation (usually counting siblings, but sometimes includes cousins) to show affection or intimacy. For example, Jiang Fengmian normally calls Madam Yu "三娘 San Niang (third daughter (of the family generation))", but he calls her by her full name "Yu Ziyuan" when they are arguing. The way how Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji both like to call each other by their given names also shows how straightforward (*cough* blunt *cough*) they are. San Lang calls Xie Lian "哥哥 Gege (big brother)" instead of his name. This is somewhat similar to nii-san in Japanese. However, this particular combination of characters is usually only used by: 1) blood-related siblings; 2) very small children calling non-related older boys; 3) women calling their older male lover. This usage is similar to "郎 Lang" but the level of lovey-dovey smushiness (or in-your-face-ness) is different. Imagine "Lang"="darling", "Gege"="sweetie pie/honey buns". When San Lang said "you're so intimidating", a better translation is "you're so amazing/awesome". In Chinese history, clothes with the word "囚 Imprisionment" are usually for the inmates, not the prison guards. When Xie Lian said "Your hair is messy", the correct translation is "Your hair is wonky after a night's sleep." When San Lang said "My hair feels more knotted up", the correct translation is "Why do I feel that my hair is more askew after he recombed it?". Yeah, I was the one that mentioned that 瘟神 Plague god also has the meaning "bringer of bad luck/misfortune".

This! Episode! Is! So! Fun! Smirk Jr. is now given a name. San Lang! Oh cute boy next door San Lang…or is he???? Lol, you just have to wait and seeeee~~~~ my questions in the last week’s reaction still apply!!! But I love his and Xie Lian’s interactions in this episode. They instantly have good chemistry, and even though Xie Lian is suspicious and skeptical about San Lang, he still seems to be having so much fun just talking about him. This is evident in the way when San Lang leaves to go find wood to make a door, you could see Xie Lian constantly glancing at the curtains, wondering if he scared off his new friend and looking sad about it. It gives you glimpses of how lonely Xie Lian is, even if he doesn’t blatantly acknowledge it. There’s so much I want to point out in this episode, but I think they’re all spoilers so I’ll just keep them to myself until WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY later when you get deeper into the novel. The portrait San Lang paints is so pretty in the donghua, but I can’t wait until you see how it looks in the manhua. It’s absolutely stunning, probably my favorite between the two adaptations. But I think the portrait in the donghua is a more realistic way of how it would be drawn in Ancient China (I’m not an expert though). Either way, they both have their own appeals 🥰🥰🥰 One thing I’d like to point out is that the ghosts chasing after them in this episode, their designs are actually censored versions. They’re described differently in the book, and I doubt they could show them as they were in the book so they chose this design instead. I won’t spoil how they’re different just because this scene in the book is so funny and fun, but I just wanted to share that little tidbit! This first season is 11 episodes (12 for Netflix) and then the OVA is the 13th episode on Netflix. I never realized how fast these episodes are going, we’re already halfway there! I guess we did spoil you with all the MDZS content. If only we would finally get a season 2 release date 😢😢😢😢 As always, looking forward to next week’s reaction!

I loved this episode! And yessss, San Lang! :) The “boy next door!” Yesssss! I’m so excited to learn more about him! And yes, they have great chemistry right off the bat! And YES! Xie Lian is already whipped for our red-clad man! :) I love it! Thank you for not spoiling me! I’m soooooo excited to get into the novel and get more with their interactions! I loooove the portrait that San Lang paints, but I’m SO excited for the manhua and to see these characters in that version! Oohhhhhhhhh, interesting! I’m REALLY excited to see how the novel describes the ghosts! :D I have a feeling I’m going to have a lot of fun with the novel! Ooohhh, nice about there being all 13 on Netflix but yes, I was SO SPOILED for MDZS….this season is going so fast, but hopefully we get season 2’s announced SOON! :) Thank you so much for the kind words and comment!
