*HEADPHONE WARNING*

This episode was SO full of content - Backstory on Misato, Shinji's character and "purpose" as a pilot coming full circle, the most calm and collected evacuation and handling of a potentially doomed scenario EVER; more questions being asked and few answers being given to us...but what answers they are!

Next episode is the halfway point of the anime series, and I don't know whether to be super hyped or incredibly nervous...both? Both sounds good.

You know when the shoreline disappears before a tsunami?

Misato's line about how the children will be safe inside the Eva stood out to me on this rewatch. It seemed strange-after all the risk and danger we've established for the mission (including writing wills!), why would they undermine it like that? Then I realized that Misato here is doing for the children what her father did for her: providing physical safety from a giant angel explosion, even as she is facing death. When you look at it that way, the steak dinner becomes sort of heartbreaking. Just as daddy Katsuragi didn't connect with his daughter emotionally, Misato acts as a military commander first, and her attempt at big-sister generosity falls flat due to her differences with the post-Second-Impact generation. Shinji and Asuka up parenting her here, in a way.

Yessss, those points are so good to bring up; I didn't notice that connection with her and her dad at first as well! Thank you for the comment and pointing that out!
