**ROLE-WORTHY HEADHPONE WARNINGS**

I'm SO glad y'all convinced me to watch these four episodes together! I also want to apologize for my #TaurusEnergy in this, because I vent a little of my frustrations with the double-standard our boy Sawamura has been dealt. I've never been prouder of our sunshine boy for standing up for himself and expressing that he KNOWS HIS ROLE. That #AceEnergy, y'all!

I have a feeling things are going to get "down and dirty" this season, as Kataoka seems to see himself in Furuya (maybe why he's being partial?), Furuya is struggling with personal growth vs. his role as the Ace, Koshu and Sawamura develop a battery, and Miyuki's just keeping track of it all as the CCC. This episode...and we're already done with a tournament?! HOLY SMOKES.

Oh man these episodes. I felt so frustrated but also sad for furuya, and then so happy and vindicated for sawamura, and kataoka?! I love you but you messed uppp. I actually sympathize with furuya a lot here though because imagine you’re 16 and just pitched THE best game of your life in front of the entire nation, and now everyone’s watching you and expecting things from you, and now you KNOW what you’re capable of but it still wasn’t enough. You want to go higher and get better but like you’re 16 and haven’t had a real team before all this/still struggle to break old habits and remember what that means and you want to win with them but you don’t know HOW. Except to put your head down and keeping pushing on like you always have, trying to overpower the batter with brute force. Him thinking that if he’s number one his team will be number one is pretty simplistic and naive, and yes self important, but it’s not coming from a place of maliciousness. He’s just so lost in his own head and I can’t help but feel sorry for him. He’s put so much subconscious responsibility on himself and forgotten the lessons he’s learned from the team, it’s no wonder he’s buckling and can’t get into his groove. The funny thing is though, most of the team aren’t aware that this whole breakdown is happening. We get such an omniscient perspective at times that it’s easy to forget that everyone else is limited. Furuya doesn’t speak much and keeps most of his thoughts to himself, all the others see is his ever increasing determination and drive post nationals, and they respect that. They remember what he told them before that finals match and then saw him play at an unprecedented level. He’s their ace. Miyuki by way of being his catcher has more insight into where his mind is at now, and challenges him a bit during their practice/seems more aware of the potentially impending issue, but I think he also sees a lot of his loner tendencies/quiet competitiveness reflected in furuya and wants to support him through his current struggle. Kataoka was the only one privy to the journal, and well, we saw how that went down. He DEFINITELY self projected a bit there with his personal experiences in mind (we also have to remember that at the beginning of the series, he WANTED an ace, but had to make do with the pitcher relay and made it work for him), but we also love him for how much heart he has in connecting to all his players. He believes in them wholeheartedly (we’ve seen him stick with tanba in difficult situations before after all, and sometimes it’s worked out and sometimes it hasn’t), but it’s also his job and duty as coach to do what’s best for the team, except in the heat of this match he THOUGHT that that’s what he was doing, even though in hindsight it clearly wasn’t. Ochiai coming through here with the “cold” logic and rationality juxtaposed with what kataoka once said to him is just, so wow. On the other hand though, SAWAMURA. I just typed an entire paragraph about how I feel for furuya and want him to get back on his feet, but not this injustice at the expense of our sunshine boy!! God I was SO proud of how he held down the fort this game. His mind was clear and he did exactly what needed to be done, despite how frustrating this whole experience must’ve been for him. Sawamura is like, the definition of when life gives you lemons istg. Life is fair but not fair?! His frustration is so valid and heart wrenching because he WANTS to be the ace, but his friend is the ace and he acknowledges that and supports him, but he also has to stand by and witness how much special privilege that affords him even when he flat out crashes and burns during a match like omgg. And he KNOWS that furuya is good so wHAT ARE YOU DOING. And then kataoka has to apologize to him because everyone knows that was a bad call and it probably just feels, SO humiliating for him AND furuya. Arghhh. I don’t think the reporter thing would’ve bothered him much though, like if he didn’t wanted kataoka to apologize then I don’t think he would’ve wanted attention just because he did his job when his teammate failed. And it makes sense in a meta way for all the reporters to still be up in furuyas face despite his poor performance, he’s a big name now after making a splash at nationals, and people would want to know what he has to say for himself after such a drastic difference in performance. Like honestly, one of the things I appreciate most about daiya is that everyone is so human and prone to human fallacies, like there is not a single character that hasn’t messed up or contradicted themself at some point. They all have their own experiences and preconceived notions/biases and sometimes that works in their favor and sometimes it doesn’t. Whether they’re a player or a coach, they’re all just trying to learn and grow and win but the process is sO messy and sometimes you take one step forward and two steps back. We got that with sawamura and the yips arc at first, ryou/mochi, even miyuki with his captaincy, and now it looks like it’s furuya’s turn to struggle. It makes them feel so real but boy do I want to rip my hair out sometimes 😂 I have so many conflicting emotions but ugh I am so here for all of it regardless. Anyway I did not mean to go on this tirade but I hope you enjoy next week!

Your opening sentences are basically my thoughts on these episodes! Hahaha! That’s a great point about Furuya – I can definitely relate to doing really good and seemingly peaking, but knowing you haven’t peaked and wanting to do better and just doing what you KNOW. I commented on Kelsey’s post, but I think Furuya definitely needs some mentoring to help get him a “game plan.” Just telling a 16 year old he can be the best pitcher in Japan isn’t enough; the boy needs some realistic goals to work on, but I totally agree that I can’t hate Furuya, because he’s not a jerk…he just is trying to do his best. And YES, because Furuya’s so quiet, most people on the team don’t even notice it. And Miyuki, while he tries to help, is a lot LIKE Furuya, so he thinks that his strategies that help himself will help Furuya (sort of reflecting back on how he acted with Nabe in S2). With Kataoka, though, he self-projected, indeed. That dang journal. It’s crazy how Kataoka’s heart actually got the better of him, here, and what is usually his biggest strength as a coach actually clouded his judgment to the point where OCHIAI (Furuya fan boy) had to bring him back to reality. It’s wild, indeed. And yes, as much as I want to see our boy Furuya not self-implode, it was SO SATISFYING to see Sawamura take a stand and lay down the BD energy, here. Sawamura IS that “life gives you lemons” phrase, wow, nicely said! His disappointment was PALPABLE in this set of episodes. Because yeah, his friend is the ace, and he respects him, but in this moment he doesn’t get what’s going on with him. And yes, his humiliation at Kataoka’s apology and frustration – it’s good to see a sunshine character establish some dominance! I felt for him! And yeah, Daiya is great about having such realistic moments, like characters facing bad decisions and challenges and the media being like they are (the interview moment afterwards still frustrates me, hahaha). I just want both Sawamura and Furuya to come out better after the struggle – I am hopeful that will be the case, but mangaka sure likes to lead us on a journey, eh? Thank you for the comment! Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I’m excited about this week’s episodes! :D

Couple of thoughts... It feels like Sawamura ca pitch "freely" because he is not weighted down by the weight of being the Ace - he does not have the expectations being placed on him or his own expectations of himself. As Fuyura implodes the team on the field, in the dugout and in the stands gets quiet. As soon as Sawamura steps on to the field the energy picks back up. The team on and off the field gets vocal again. Those Kuramochi kicks to Sawamura's behind will be missed, we need someone new to pick him in the backside to keep the boy on the straight and narrow. There is such a huge difference in how the team interacts with Sawamura and Furuya. Maybe someone needs to kick Furuya in the backside now and again.

Yessss, there definitely is an air about being the ace and the pressure it brings -- I think that Sawamura does have expectations of himself and how he wants to perform, but he's so mad because he knows that Furuya's better than that and wants to step in and help -- but that's just my take. I do think that Furuya has caved a bit under the pressure of being the ace that Sawamura hasn't had; I definitely agree with you there! :) Hahahahaha, someone kicking Furuya in the backside...yesssssss...hmmm...maybe Koshu? Hm. Furuya's so introverted and quiet; I think that the others wouldn't know how he would take it, haha! Maybe Sawamura can do it? :P
