**HEADPHONE WARNINGS, Y'ALL!**

I have wanted to see Reiner and Eren meet again since Season 2 ended, but like this? With poor Falco watching in the wings (pun intended)? While above them, Eren's own "hometown" is declared war against?!

This entire episode was nothing but tensions stacked upon tension; a quiet fury before the bomb that is Eren Jaeger finally went off -- and in the middle of the world's VIP, newspapers, Eldian civilians, and the Marleyan military, it looks like all hell is about to break loose! Just another typical day for the Attack on Titan universe, eh? There's lots to talk about...

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

I love Eren since the beginning and seeing him like this makes me sad but also hype I love him 😩😩

Nathan Hardy

Of course Eren was going to attack, he's the Attack Titan, not the Chill Out and Relax While War is Being Declared Titan 😛 Something I thought about, the reason Free Willy gaslights the crowd that Eren can start Rumbling at anytime is because when Reiner came back, he reported that Eren was able to control Titans at the S2 finale. No one in Marley knows that Eren needs to touch a Titan of Royal Blood, because no one besides Eren didn't know anything about Jealous Wife Titan.

Uri 3x10 - “Yes. It’s the unavoidable truth. Even so, I believe in the miracle that happened back then” In ‘Friends’ Uri poses that violence is necessary but what was it that made himself and Kenny friends? It was communication and understanding. But as Uri says himself, their friendship was indeed a ‘miracle’. And here we have in 4x5 two people, two enemies, two eternal rivals, who are finally communicating and understating each other. But sadly violence wins out. Eren believes he has no choice. And a miracle does not happen. I’ve been pondering this particular theme in the story for a while (particularly as pt2 is currently airing) and it just makes me feel soo heavy and sad because understating and listening to the other side is the harder road sadly. (But surely it’s worth trying right? Even if it’s a miracle if it happens) Eren is not doing this out of revenge anymore. He finally understands Reiner and everything he has gone through. Reiner came into this conversation wanting to be ‘judged’ and instead was offered a small bit of compassion. It’s sad that the ONLY person who could understand Reiner is the person whom he very much hurt the most. Eren’s choice in the end wasn’t malicious, it was simply what he thought had to be done. Because he was ‘born into this world’. The small smile and the almost sigh as he closes his eyes absolutely breaks my heart. This episode is truly a masterclass in writing, music, art direction, voice work, all of it. A Top 5 AOT episode EASY. Everything has been building up to this moment and there’s no turning back now. As a manga reader when this first aired I was just a crying mess as I desperately wanted this pivotal moment to be done right and they (baseball term very much intended) hit it out off the park. * Cool things time * This episodes covers 99 and most importantly the celebrated chapter 100 of the manga ‘Declaration of War’ What a way to celebrate Isayama!! The chapter also ends with Eren exploding out of the ELDIAN HOUSING building and throwing Willy Tybur into the air. There’s some really iconic shots in the manga that I’m excited for you to experience for yourself Eren here did the exact same thing as Bertolt did in 3x15. Bertolt knew and understood that both sides were the same and nobody was in the right or wrong, but still moved forward and decided to kill his ‘enemies’ because the ‘world is just that cruel’ The song ‘XL TT’ plays when Willy identifies Eren Jaeger as the world’s enemy and talks of the Rumbling. Which is the iconic season 1 track that also plays when Eren saves Armin in 1x5 and when the colossal kicks the gate in 1x1. Cool details to stew on…

The truck

Well, the ep 6 hype seems... hype? :D I'm so scared of Eren, and like... even when rewatching some eps from s1, I'm still scared of him. Which is awful, because I can't tell anyone that I'm scared of him since that would be pretty much almost spoiling, until... this episode? Like oh my fucking god, those eyes of his? I literally saw those in my nightmares. Also, watching this "declaration of war" hit's way different when I was literally reading news about the ukraine russian thing right before I decided to watch this. Yikes.

What gets me is how cold, unemotional, almost monotone Eren's voice is now. We saw hints of this change back at the end of Season 3. There has been such a change in his demeanor that goes along with shift in his thought processes and ideals.

This episode is soo good, and almost endlessly rereadable/rewatchable. Not throwing shade on the rest of final season part 1, which has some of the best yet to come, but I think this might be my favorite episode aired so far. It just doesn't get old. And I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt reading that chapter for the first time. Apropos "aired so far", the next three weeks have a very good chance of breaking the internet. I would strongly suggest ramping up your anti-spoiler strategies. Injuries by themselves do not automatically prevent you from transforming. Eren transformed with his arm and leg chomped off in the Santa titan belly, Reiner and Bertolt transformed with the injuries Mikasa gave them on the wall, etc. Levi (when fighting the Beast Titan in Shiganshina) suggests that it's specifically injuries received *after* transforming that need to be healed before people can transform again, which seems to fit what we have seen so far. This arc has lots of stuff happening in the background that is completely transparent once you figure it out, but the story mostly expects you to figure it out yourself. As you suggested last episode, going back to "From One Hand to Another" is probably not a bad idea once the story gives you a bit of room to breathe again. Some of the things should be much clearer then. Very enjoyable reaction and discussion.

2022-02-02 13:38:45 Favorite episode of the season, there's plenty of favs tho it's VERY HARD but I always come back to this one. Seeing two Child Soldiers now grown men come to an understanding with eachother & realize they are more similar than they thought. Having Eren know Reiner's answers to his questions & still creates that dialogue with him was everything even knowing the outcome at the end of the episode (Which is so Eren) it's just so good & sad. Reiner breaking down & both of them being vulnerable talking about everything they've been through & how they've affected eachothers lives. Willy with the reveals as well just building the tension the whole way through. Eren saying "I'm the bad guy. I might just destroy the world but to me, you were the bad guys too" Aaaaahhh I felt that!! Chills. I couldn't breathe when I first watched this lol I still get tense watching it. I was screaming with you😂I was so scared & had every right to be with that ending!💀They did a good job building that tension. Declaration of war welp Eren is here to strike first. RIP to all the innocent Eldians in that building😭Eren really said I understand you Reiner but I'm still dropping the bomb. I have no choice. I understand why Eren made this choice tho, they declared war & he's going to do anything he can to protect his people, delay them & attack first. They were planning to come to Paradis whether Eren attacked or not, Eren just speed up things. Idk if he was right or wrong. This whole thing is too complicated but I love the conversations we all have in the fandom with this attack. Everyone has mixed feelings or completely agrees with this, I think that's what Isayama wanted, to start this conversation of war & how it all depends on your perspective & the side your on. (If you even pick a side) Isayama's been doing this since the beginning but it hits more when our main character is doing the harm. Eren's growth has led us to this moment. War is terrible but we here so let it begin😬This episode was everything & more⭐ Your reaction & breakdown is even more of a highlight. Can't wait until Tuesday!

This episode is perfection and top 5 for me - the dialogue, the tension building, the music, the shots, everything about it is “chef’s kiss”. My reaction to it was very similar and as soon as the last line “I’ll keep moving forward until I destroy my enemies” was said, I knew stuff was going to get real REAL. I personally find the next episodes quite heavy (not sure if you’ve watched 6 or 7 yet but you will probably know what I meant by “heavy”) but they are one of the best in the series and this season as a whole is just… outstanding. I’m Looking forward to every future reaction and discussion :)

2022-02-02 13:38:45 In regards to Uri having a dialogue with the world, when the Karl Fritz took them inside the walls to protect the world from the destructive and dominating nature of Eldians. What could Uri really say to the world, have they really changed. In the previous episode Magath implied the Tyburs were the supreme commander of the Marley. After their mission to Paradis Reiner & Zeke would have had to file reports to the military, including that the founding titan is not with the Royal family but Eren Yeager. Tybur would have read these reports.

Yesss, this episode was mind-blowing, but honestly, YES. I watched Episode 6 and my mind melted. It was a lot to take in. So much so, that I had to re-watch episodes 4-6 yesterday and prep Whiteboard-kun for a mini-review BEFORE watching Episode 7. We're not even halfway through part 1 yet and I feel I've watched an entire season...**nervous laughter** Thank you for the kind words and comment! :D I'm excited to talk with you all, too!

romaniablack

100% this -- I never thought I would long for the days when Eren was a feral rage monster again...but yeah, Eren gaining all this knowledge has been SUCH a double-edged sword for his character...not sure how I feel about it all. T-T

romaniablack

Eren really grew on me in the third season, up until the end of the season when we saw how broken he'd become. The Basement really demanded a price, didn't it? :( I wonder if Grisha expected his son to be this broken once he found out the truth.

romaniablack

Why can't we have Eren, the Attack War Through Negotiation Titan? :P *cries* "Free Willy" kills me! Hahahahaha! And yeah, that's true that no one else knows that Eren needs to touch a royal blood titan for everything to work...interesting...

romaniablack

Oh, Episode 6 melted my brain. And Eren is legitimately scarier than he's ever been...at least rage mode feral Eren was somewhat predictable...this Eren is NOT, and that's concerning. You can't get a clear reading what he's thinking... And yes....seeing the local news while watching this series...yikes, indeed.

romaniablack

That's a fair point; this is why we can't have nice things, right?! And that's a good point about the reports being filed by Reiner and Zeke (and Pieck to an extent), that makes a lot of sense about Eren being mentioned as well! Thanks for pointing that out!

romaniablack

It's going to be nigh impossible to rank these episodes, I can tell already! But yeah, two child soldiers realizing they have more in common than they once thought. It makes me want to see them work together...but...we can't have nice things, can we? This whole episode was just someone pulling the pin on the grenade and the tension kept mounting all the way until the end -- getting lore bombs and everything! And in the end, Eren delivers the first blow. Typical Eren, right? It's just heartbreaking; reminds me of Bertholdt's decision as well -- and Mikasa's too -- interestig....yeah, lots of complex thoughts about all this that will probably take me the rest of Part 1 to sort through. But Eren's character development has all led here....thank you for the kind words! And yeah, next week should be fun! **nervous laughter**

2022-02-02 13:38:46 This episode was SO good, and such buildup from the first four episodes leading in -- I cannot IMAGINE reading this in the manga for the first time, but I'm SOOOO looking forward to it when we get there! ^^ And yesssss, I've been staying off the Internet quite a bit these last few weeks. Fun times, but will be worth it, eh? And that's a good point about injuries and transformation that I forget a lot -- Isayama, why must you make these things complex? Haha! And yesssss, after Episode 6, my brain melted, so before recording Episode 7 (which is where I'm at right now), I needed to re-watch Ep 4-6 and do a mini-recap before Episode 7. It did help a LOT and let me breathe! :) Thank you so much for the kind words and comment! <3

Damn, I will have to address the first part of your comment in Ep 8 when I get to it, because it's basically articulated what I've been woefully trying to say in the discussions regarding Uri and creating a dialogue, so THANK YOU FOR THAT! It's SO frustrating -- a part of me wonders, had this been Armin instead of Eren talking with Reiner...would things be different? At this point, Eren/Bertholdt seem to be more similar in their reasonings...sure, Armin doesn't have nearly as much in common with Reiner as Eren, but maybe a dialogue could have happened? Who knows. In any case, I cannot IMAGINE reading this in the manga and then seeing this come to life; I look forward to doing the reverse when I get to the manga reviews. And the fact that this was 100 chapters in. Damn, Isayama. What a way to celebrate, eh? And ahhhh....interesting about the soundtrack....hmmmm.....thank you so much for the comment!

Be Happy

Hi there Romania, sorry I am a bit late to the party ;) first of it all, that was a wonderful reaction, you were completely freaking out and as terrorised as Reiner , I loved how empathetic you were, fearing for everyone and not only "our" MC, cause at this point everybody is the MC of their own story even the side characters, and then the discussion, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it.. As I told you in twitter, I looove this episode so much it's in my top 2 of the season, and for a season that have a ridiculous amount of wonderful episodes, it's something... It was building up and building up that climatic moment with so much perfection ... the transition between the play and the basement, the direction was really brilliant... That discussion though, it's utterly fascinationg seeing those two old friends/ennemies talking about things that absolutely no one else can understand but them.. funny that the only one that Reiner could confess to is Eren, because otherwise he loose his titan and his life... and that breakdown broke me, how much has he to endure to atone and live, just live... You said Reiner was a slave to his loyality to Marley, but I think it's not the case anymore, now he is a slave to his loyality to his family and especially a slave to his guilt and self-loathing. Some point I wanted to unswer (without spoiling of course) to what you said in the discussion ; They knew Eren's titan form because Reiner already saw it so he gave intel to Marley ..... They also know that Eren didn't have royal blood through Zeke and Reiner intel but they dont know that there are conditions to activate the Founding , thus the declaration of war !! Another remark , Tybur told Magath that they gave Marley the military freedom, so in my opinion, the Tyburs were not aware of the Paradise Operation 9 yrs ago in which 4 child warriors went to retrieve the founding otherwise they would have interfered to stop it, and as Willy said, I am just the one that holds the wheel , so it was just his bas luck to be the Tybur head in the same time that a non royal has the founding titan.......and to end my long long comment , the parallel with how we know Eren from 3 precedent season, how we see Eren now and how Tybur discribe Eren to the world , it's a direct reminder of that wonderful line, Kruger told Grisha on the wall in S03 ep 21 : " Anyone could be a God or a Devil, all it takes is for people to believe it "..... I m really impatient to watch your next ep ( 5-6-7 from season 4 are a bit like 16-17-18 from season 1 , at least they gave me that vibe of epicness :) )

Sacha

No problem! 😄 It’s just something that I’ve been currently thinking about with this story. I’ll comment on this more as times goes on and you go deeper into the series. But I think a lot of people in the fandom misses a point that Isayama is making. He has I feel a real love of human dignity in his story and Armin in particular exemplifies the rejection of nihilism and the human capacity to look beyond the violence and seek hope. Isayama has spoken in the past that he sees himself as Armin in this story. And I think it’s more than just because Armin is the narrator. He also has said in a fairly recent interview that he surprised himself that he now feels alot like Eren too (I’ll keep the reason why to myself for now)

romaniablack

Oooohhhh, thank you for not spoiling on why Isayama feels like Eren...that will be fun to figure out as we go, but it DEFINITELY makes sense Isayama relates to Armin -- using him as the narrator, having him be a source of boundless optimism and hope beyond violence -- definitely connect to him as well! <3 I'm excited to talk about all this in a future discussion!

romaniablack

You're never too late to the comment party! :) Thank you for the comment and kind words -- I feel like Reiner at this point in the series...stressed and needing a hug, hahaha! And SERIOUSLY, I'm just worried for all of them at this point! That's a really good point, that only Eren was someone Reiner could confess to...which is really....SAD. And heartbreaking. Thanks for pointing that out, though! Having watched up to Episode 7 at this point, I definitely agree! I would say 4-5-6 tie together to me, but Episode 7 goes right along with it -- we're just on the roller coaster now, aren't we?! UGH. So much to talk about but thank you again for the comment! I love that everyone's so hyped!!

Toni simi

At the moment I'm having a really hard time to write comments. Hopefully it get's better soon and I can fully write something. I know I said it dozens of times but Hosoyan is incredible in voicing break downs. God, I love this man and his voice. I probably just forgot about it but when did Pieck ever saw Armin? The only time I can remember would be after Armin was burned. Wish you a wonderful day!!

romaniablack

Hahahaha, I appreciate y'all not spoiling me -- I can't imagine how hard it is, if that's limiting people's comments. And Hosoyan is one of my favorite VA's -- his role as Reiner in this season has been nothing short of incredible. His breakdowns, too, have been so amazing! 100% agree! And I was thinking that she saw him when she was spying on the scouts as they were in the woods nearing Shiganshina...of course, that's been proven wrong (in the next episode or two), but that's where my head was. :) Thanks for the comment and have a great day, too!
