**Jaw-Dropping Headphone Warning!**

Can I spend two hours talking about Eren and Reiner parallels? SURE I CAN!

I went into this episode thinking this would be about the upcoming festival mentioned last episode, but NOPE, instead it's a character study of Reiner, whose haunted, traumatized demeanor this season is finally explained...and HO. IS IT A BACKSTORY! It brought tears to my eyes by the end, finally understanding his motivations and why he's done the things he has this entire series.

But before I can cry, Isayama drops ANOTHER BOMBSHELL with our mysterious "injured man" that Falco's befriended. Isayama...Jaw on the FLOOR, y'all!

NOTE: This episode dealt with some heavy situations; no one is alone, so I'm putting this here:

Reiner focus is always a lot to handle This episode is insane and Eren is a menace I love it ❤️

That grasshopper was cosplaying as Petra 🤗 Now we see the impact Marcel had on everyone, revelation that he wasn't just a warrior, he was the leader of the RAMB squad sent to infiltrate the Walls. So Ymir literally threw a monkey wrench in their mission when she ate him. The inspiration of Reiner's "soldier" persona was Marcel. Considering he had ranked #2 in the 104th right behind Mikasa, Reiner proved he was never weak nor incapable as Porco derides him to be, he had what it took in him all-along. Of course, that plot armor helped a bit. It's not like Reiner bulked up via that bread and soup famine diet lol. 🍞🍲

"That grasshopper was cosplaying as Petra 🤗" bruh...

In the OVA where they go to save Historia, Reiner is the one who tells them not to give up and continue the mission to save her. I didn't notice that until way later, and it continues to remind me how much foreshadowing there is even in the OVAs.

See whenever you mentioned back in season 1 that you shipped Reiner and Annie, all I could do was laugh to myself and my mind just kept flashing to this scene where Annie, quite frankly, beat the ever living shit out of Reiner. Yeaaaaaahhhh it’s safe to say that that ship never set sail … Now where to start with this doozy of an episode. Why are the backstories portions for his characters Isayama’s finest work in his story? He does it every single time without fail! It’s probably safe to mention that the anime does condense this part quite a bit as this was a sizeable portion of the manga. It’s not a ruined experience for me as a manga reader but I think you’ll enjoy these chapters quite a bit once you set you sights on the manga yourself. Annie 1x23: “personally, even if it means being a weakling swept up in the flow, being seen as person is all I want” Reiner 2x6: “if only I knew that there were people like this….I wouldn’t have become such a half-assed piece of shit” Bertolt 2x11: Someone please .. someone find us!” These really are quotes and moments that are forever changed once you have context of what these children went through. Don’t know about you but I’d say E/M/A get off pretty light. At least they had some form of a childhood. Sure they were trapped in a birdcage (and mikasa’s situation was pretty fucked) but at least they didn’t live with the knowledge everyday that the world thinks they are scum and are brought up as tools like R/B/A. Reiner tried to please the only structure he was aware of. And now has to live with all the guilt, self loathing, trauma, depression, suicidal thoughts *sigh* His downward spiral was almost destined. Now, I’m kinda gunna rat on Reiner’s mum for this because this grief stricken women treated Reiner, who was a lil kid, as an outlet for her pain. Which you should absolutely not do to a child. Sure don’t lie to him about his circumstances but don’t confide in him about your pain. Your job as a parent at this time is to give him a sense of security and safety. You can confide in him when he is more grown up, but now Reiner at that formative age is seeing his mother in pain and of course wants to do something about it. Your first world view as a person is your parents after all. But of course he goes off into the world and is at every turn beaten down and down and down untill we are left with this broken man. God Isayama whhyyyyyyyyyy!!! I think Eren at the end isn’t so much commenting on the ‘slave to something’ that Kenny talks about. But is more talking about how it’s our family, governments, situations etc that push people to go to war. I think it’s to make it clear that Eren is fully self aware of what the Eldians go through on the other side and perhaps what Reiner and the other warriors also have gone through. Now the question is what does he do with this information? To end this long ramble a few ‘cool’ things. Remember Reiner didn’t automatically heal his arm back at Utgard Castle and the wall and did it in a split moment when he revealed himself. Giving the impression that you can ‘will’ it not to happen. I love that it’s just casually thrown in here that Bertolt was basically a prodigy. You’ll recognise young Reiner’s VA as Yuuji (jujutsu kaisen) And I said before that Reiner is Isayama’s favourite character but did you know there is photographic evidence that in his office space there is the a manga page of Reiner about to eat a bullet #JustWriterThings (as a writer myself I know the urge to make your characters go through all the worst kinds of hell)

Polygon

One thing the anime kind of portrays incorrectly is that the attack on the walls began right after Reiner choked out Annie, and that she woke up AFTER they infiltrated. Annie was very much a part of the attack as she was the one who called all the Pure Titans to enter the walls.

2022-02-02 13:39:27 I am living for all of these Reiner Thumbnails lol he deserves it now that we are getting the eldians from Marley's side of things (Also cuz of glow up😂😂😂) It's so funny back in season 1 you thought Reiner & Annie were a thing lol good times. I could feel all of us AOT fans cringing at that statement knowing this scene of Annie brutalizing Reiner😭🏃🏽‍♂️This also made me miss Bertholdt alot omg he was so sweet. I was getting emotional with you omg I went into this season not liking Reiner cuz I still haven't recovered from him killing Marco (Yes I'm a baby about it still) but yea these episodes were like YOUR GONNA LOVE HIM ANYWAY DAMMIT!!!😂The character development is so good. What a loaded character Reiner is. Why do I always love these complex characters😎Crazy, Let's drop Eren at the end of the episode too like WHAT!!🔥Once I heard his voice I was like sir👀👀👀Is that Eren?! Then the eye confirmed it for me lol I couldn't breathe😂I too had to rewind the speech. Amazing speech btw & episode. Thank you Falco for saving Reiner out of frustration unknowingly. Insane. Gotta love the Eren & Reiner Parallels. Love them. The lighting in that scene of Reiner helping Eren omg Mappa stop⭐😂so beautiful!!

Re the S4P2 OP, community opinion seems to have shifted a bit - the OP is quite important for setting the mood (like it does on S4P1) and some of the things it 'spoils' are pretty much unavoidable anyway. It's not like the S3P2 OP where many of the major scenes are shown. It's not much more spoilery than say the S2 OP, you see some quick and vague cuts of things that happen, things that already happened, and things that (probably?) don't happen, without context. (And two of the most spoilery shots are within about 7-10 seconds near the beginning, you can just put your hand over your eyes for a moment and their gone). Porco is an interesting character, but he is certainly a complete prick. (Interesting by regular standards at least, he faces stiff competition in AoT...) Not a spoiler. I think Annie is just trying to get out of the situation by giving a somewhat believable explanation, with the possible angle of getting close to Kenny if he actually believes her story. Bertolt's sleeping position is very close to the position depicted on the Hanged Man tarot card. It's derived from the punishment for traitors in Sicily, and apparently supposed to symbolize sacrifice and wisdom. Great discussion as always, it's going to be hard to wait for next week.

I was hoping we'd get 2 episodes just for Reiner's flashback. There is enough content from the manga to do so, it gives us even more context of what the warriors had been doing on the island all the difficulty they were facing, slowly beating them down mentally, it's so good.

romaniablack

I am excited to go back when I do the manga reviews and see more of Reiner!! That does have me excited, and it's so rewarding to see everything finally all come together like this after so many seasons!

romaniablack

INTERESTING! I'm planning on reading and doing Manga Reviews for here after I'm done with the series, so I'm excited to see what all was left out and to talk about it! Thank you!!

romaniablack

I about choked on my drink at that Petra comment, for the record. WOW XD Yeah, Marcel's impact...it was like Marco...and Marlo....RULE OF MARS, eh? And yeah, Ymir likes to throw a wrench in things, eh? And I do like the idea that Reiner was the 2nd strongest without Bertholdt or Annie "letting him" be -- that's great. he had it in him all along....I mean...Reiner's metabolism is the real hero in all this. :)

romaniablack

I can't resist letting Reiner grace the thumbnails; he's too good not to -- and seriously, I'm glad y'all just laughed at my Reiner/Annie ship -- the cringe makes alllll the more sense, now! @_@ And yeah, realizing Bertholdt was a sweeter character than we may have thought...I do miss him, too. And yeah, Marco's death is still one of the worst, but seeing how Reiner has suffered? It's heartbreaking. I just can't believe how much depth he's gotten...and then, yeah, Eren just popping in to say hi! Falco, he's too precious; I'm fearful for our boy and just want them all to be safe...can't you do that for us, Isayama?! PLEASE? And yessss, MAPPA's lighting on these scenes with Reiner? STUNNING.

romaniablack

Hmmmm, that's interesting about the OP; I'll probably wait until we get closer to poll everyone about it! :) And I'm glad I'm not the only one to think Porco is a prick, hahaha! Annie's confrontation with Kenny is still intriguing to me but that note about Bertholdt's sleeping position! Wow! Interesting....I'm going to bring him and the hanged man up again in a future reaction, so that is intriguing...Thank you so much for the kind words and ho ho ho...next week is going to be...fun? Yeah, we'll go with that.

romaniablack

RIGHT?! Man….I feel sheepish suggesting it, NOW. @_@ Man…yeah, where to start?! I am REALLY excited to do manga reviews of this series and get to those moments! 😊 YAY! Although that is sad they had to cut a lot. And yessss, those lines from them…everything is changed once you truly know the context…yeah….they are like the “darker” version of EMA, considering their upbringing compared to our main trio. ☹ And yeah, Reiner’s spiral has been SO sad! ☹ And yes, Reiner’s mother was using her son to project her own insecurities and pain on, which was awful, again – tying to Grisha’s whole argument of how it’s a sin to project your own beliefs on your children. Hmmm….yeah, Isayama, why you making Reiner so broken?! Yesss, what will Eren do with this info?! THAT IS THE QUESTION! OHHH, thank you for that note about Reiner’s arm! Hmmmm….that’s the example I was looking for for a future reaction! 😊 Of course Bertholdt is a prodigy, just modest about it…and awwww, that’s adorable that his young VA is the same as Yuuji! ^^ I love that. And man…Isayama making Reiner suffer…but…maybe…he’ll get happiness later on? **nervous chuckle** that would be nice…Thank you for the comment!

Nathan Hardy

Pieck-chan takes offense at Bertholdt being a prodigy. Just like in Highlander, there can be only one! There was a manga reference at what Bertholdt's skill was in, but I'm gonna have to withhold for spoiler reasons.

romaniablack

Hahaha, I mean, Pieck has been made up to be a prodigy, too, but I love the Highlander reference, and thank you for not spoiling! That has me so intrigued!! :D :D

Nathan Hardy

For what it's worth, Porco mentioned it during Ep 3, when he's dissing Reiner and asking him what his special ability is. I'll leave it to you to play detective 🕵️

Young Reiner is voiced by Enoki Junya who voiced Jota in Kazetsuyo and Itadori in jjk. Magath is such an intriguing character. He definitely says things we all thought. This episode has to be one of my favourites in the whole show. It's so good. Seeing just how deep Reiner's trauma is and where it actually started. I have so much I want to write but I have no idea how so it's just going to be this short comment. Wish you a wonderful day!!

romaniablack

I love that Young Reiner and Yuuji share a VA! And Jota! :) Magath has REALLY intrigued me; I'll be curious to see where his character goes and YES, this episode is officially one of my favorites in the series. It's just...so powerful! Hahaha, and I know that feeling! Thank you for the kind words and have a wonderful day, too! :)
