Sadly, you are correct about Ymir. 😞 We saw back in S2 how she offered to give back the Chain Chomp Titan she "took" from Marcel, and now we see the end result ... she was eaten by another Warrior. Ymir initially had a reputation for being selfish, but in the end, she was one of the most selfless ones in the show. Speaking of the Warriors, this does explains Reiner's line that they're "murderers with short lives" much better. Eldians in Marley are treated like absolute shit (Jews), with the armbands and segregated ghettoes. But Marley needs Eldians to inherit Titan shifters, since that is the core of their military strategy, so they dangle the Warrior program in front of Eldians as a carrot. This way, Eldians willingly offer their children up as sacrifices, fully knowing they will live only 13 more years, just so they can receive the most basic and minuscule of human rights. To the Marleyian Eldians, there's no higher honor than becoming a Warrior. They're treated like The Avengers, bringing hope to their people, because they are "Good Jews" saving the world from those evil "Demon Jews" who left them all behind to suffer while they live in bliss over at Paradis (Israel). But the sick reality is that a Warrior's tenure is a dark cycle of fighting endless war and committing countless atrocities, all in service for a nation that will never truly accept them. And it only ends in death. At the end of their 13 years, provided they're not Killed in Action already, they're eaten by their successor, passing their powers on to the next Warrior, and the cycle repeats itself. And this goes without saying, if they don't comply, their families are simply the next to be "sent to Paradise" or used as Titan weapons. It brings Bertholdt's line "We had no choice in all this, because this world ... is just that cruel" full circle.

Happy New Year Romania! Great episode, and so many lines that people quote again and again "The same history, the sme mistakes, over and over" "Whose memories are these" No wonder Kruger is about as popular in the rest of the fandom as he is with you. Some quite significant cuts from the manga (and the occasional different translations) for the whole scene on top of the wall. I like the version there even better, but I'm not going into detils, you'll see when you get to read it. The Ymir flashes that Historia sees are an anime-only thing, so I wouldn't worry to much about how exactly that works within the lore. The manga has Ymir's backstory in the letter, but the adaptation moved it to season 2, and I guess they needed something to fill the hole that move left. The comedy in this episode works for me. Hange lines to Eren, and how uncomfortable he gets about it lol (The 'phase' may be chuunibyou I guess) Really good call on the limited lifespan for titan shifters earlier. It's quite clearly foreshadowed, especially with the succession of the Reiss family, but it's subtle enough to easily miss. You're calling Isayama out? I wonder how he'll respond... Armin's lifespan is 13 years now because of Levi's decision, but without it it would have been 0 years. I guess I'd take it. Remember that Eren and Historia had their hand-holding sessions to trigger titan memories. If simple touching of royal blood were enough to access the founding titan power, it would have probably happened then. Requiring a royal titan is at least not an unreasonable guess from the information Eren has. Also, have a look at what Grischa says when he gives Eren the injection (I think it's at the Season 1 Episode 9) Great reaction, hyped for titan week!

Polygon

Imagine the absolute trip Grisha must have had when he found out his kids friends were named Mikasa and Armin lmao

romaniablack

Right?! I cannot imagine, but it would probably just further his belief that he was doing the right thing, eh? But YEAH, the sheer trip it would induce!

2022-02-02 13:41:27 The most heartbreaking thing about that age restriction is for Mikasa. Eren & Armin will be just dead and everything's done for them, they'll feel nothing after they die, but the one left behind to endure all the pain is going to be her.

Ooh, I think I realized something huge rewatching this episode. But I can't say anything. I'm pretty sure Zeke is 25 during the battle of Shiganshina. Also, I don't know if people mentioned this back in Season 1 but the anime changed a scene in Episode 6. In the manga Mikasa's mom is talking to her about a tattoo or a symbol that has been passed down in her family. Mikasa has it on her wrist. It was changed in the anime for some reason. It's better to know this now. Btw Episode 4 of Season 4 has a post-credits scene. Episode 11 too.

2022-02-02 13:41:26 Omg love the Thumbnail!! Eren Jaegar in Eren Kruger's pose as he's getting his father's memories which seems to be combining with Eren Kruger's memories aaaahhhh so cool. Genius! Yes the reveal that they only live 13 years😭Poor Mikasa I can't imagine getting that news that the two souls you cherish the most will die in 13 years & Eren not knowing till now & he has less. These memories are too much like yes he's telling his friends but to see all of that & having to come to terms of what happened then, now & Kruger getting Eren's memories when he wasn't even born yet like.....💀🏃🏽‍♂️😯Brain melt indeed. RIP Ymir omg my heart broke when I saw this scene. I was in complete denial because Ymir is one of my all time favs & for Historia to see Ymir's whole life & read her regret of not getting to marry her?! Isayama you cruel man😭Thank you Reiner for keeping your word on giving Historia the letter. Grisha & Eren Kruger omg is every character the best character?! Isayama's character development for all of his characters are insane & I can just feel the love that he puts into every character he makes as well as the hateful & evil ones which he makes you question are they truly evil lol perspective of course. I always feel conflicted & uneasy when I watch this show because everything isn't all good or bad which makes this all the more hard to watch sometimes. Kruger killing his own people just to get to where he is with Grisha. Grisha accomplishing his goal with the founding titan & now Eren has it & has to come to terms with his role in this war. It's just insane. The Attack Titan seeks freedom in any era it's in wow chills. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! May your year be filled with amazing Anime & Manga this year⭐

Now it makes sense that the original king Fritz had to install a fake king. Not just for avoiding making himself an open target of Founding Titan snatcher but also avoiding people's suspicion. If every kings die 13 years after they are crowned, it would raise a big question among the people.

ian

Im not sure if anyone has mentioned this since we've seen Eren Kruger's Attack Titan, but the Jaegers all have a distinct feature in their Titan forms. Many people think the pointy ears are a part of the Attack Titan, but Kruger doesn't have them. On the other hand, Zeke's Beast Titan does, and so does both Grisha and Eren. Just a fun detail I remembered while watching!

romaniablack

No, you're right!! I definitely will note that in the recap!! I think that is so cool!! :)

UGGG This has been so crazy! Happy New Year! Just wanted to clarify about Ymir's timeline before i forget (you said something about it around 3:00, Idk if you talk about it later im not finished the vid lol). Ymir's story actually takes place before Grisha or Dina were even born. In season 2 its revealed that she wandered outside the walls for 60 years before eating their friend. We would also add like 15-20 years on top of that because of the age she was so Ymir's story actually takes place almost 80 years ago (around 27 years after the king left and the walls were built) So it makes sense that people would want believe she was a descendant because there were no known ones in Marley at the time.

2022-02-02 13:41:25 Armin probably took his 13 years to live well as he had 0 years to live when he was injected. While Eren had no choice or idea. I think Grisha had has his memory when he reached the walls. Because dumb titans attack smart titans, so he would have needed to use his intelligence to get around them to reach the wall. Eren, Armin & Ymir get their memories back after they recover into human form, they only seem to forget about eating a human in dumb titan form. Grisha hears about Mikasa & Armin on the wall, and he also mentions them to Eren before injecting him "to save Mikasa and Armin ....you have to master....". Grisha also takes Eren on his house calls to introduce him to Mikasa.

Thank you! Yessss, Ymir’s story happened before Grisha’s (which is crazy to think about) — I’ll definitely be going over the timeline, but all the math with the years in this story…wild stuff, right?!

romaniablack

That IS true; while they both had no choice, Armin basically got a 13-year extension on his life, while Eren had his shortened without choice…that’s…really sad. And yes, by the recap, I definitely think that’s the case and we’ll talk about that! It’s insane that Grisha’s was connecting the dots on Mikasa and Armin as Eren was growing up and it tying back to his conversation with Eren about saving them before he injected him is INSANE. @__@

Be Happy

Grisha had Zeke at 19 yrs old, and when he inherited The Attack Titan he was 26. and he died eaten by Eren at 39. Zeke is 25 when he confronted the scouts is Shiganshina .

romaniablack

This is SUCH A GOOD POINT! I hadn't even really considered that side of it, but it allllll makes sense now! :)

romaniablack

Seriously, that is the most heartbreaking part...yeah, they get Armin back for a while that they weren't guaranteed before, but then Mikasa is going to lose him and lose Eren before that. :( Welp....that's soul-crushing. Thanks, Isayama.

romaniablack

Oooohhhhhh, that is SO exciting! I can't wait until you can talk about what you realized! *hype intensifies* And that makes sense with Zeke's age and VERY interesting about the tattoo! So in the anime, she does NOT have the tattoo, but in the manga she does? Intriguing...and thank you for the info on the post-credits scenes! :)

romaniablack

HOLY COW....okay...so Grisha had nearly been the Attack Titan 13 years when Eren ate him...so he had no choice but to pass it on....DAMN. Okay, that helps! Thank you for letting me know that; I've already recorded the recap, so I'll have to address that in the first episode for Season 4!

romaniablack

All the memories combining is so trippy, but I love it! And yesss, such brain melt! I feel really sad that Ymir could be/probably is dead...she was one of my favorites, but at least she got to confess her feelings to Historia. I can at least be empathetic that Reiner was adamant that letter got to Historia. But yeah, my crush-meter was through the roof for Kruger these episodes! Isayama does such a good job with layered characters; it's fantastic. And yessss...Eren coming to grips with where he stands in all this. It's insanity but I love it! Happy New Year to you, too, and here we gooooo towards Season 4!

romaniablack

The CHAIN CHOMP TITAN! OMG, if it actually looks like that? I'm all in. No spoilers, of course. :P But yeah, that is so sad. At least she got to get her confession of love to Historia...I can't hate Reiner too much for striving to get that letter to them. And yeah, the "murderers with short lives" makes soooo much more sense! Your description of the Marleyan Warriors was basically how I interpreted it, too -- it's such a terrifying cycle and explains now why Reiner and Bertholdt really couldn't talk about them being titans and the whole history of it...it all makes sense. And yeah, 13 years is basically a generation, so it just continues generation to generation. UGH. And yeah, you're right; Bertholdt's line about the "cruel world" makes so much sense, now. Damn.

romaniablack

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves Kruger! That ending!! Thank you for not spoiling the manga; I'm SO excited to eventually read it and see what all has been left out and altered for the anime, so that is very intriguing! And yessss, Isayama loves that dark comedy, and so do I, so it works for me! And ha, I'm sure I'll be eating my words calling Isayama out, for sure...not that I've done that before, right?! And yeah, Armin DID technically get a 13-year extension on his life, so that's good...I still feel so badly for Mikasa, knowing her two best friends are not long for this world and on a time clock, now. Oooh, I'll definitely go back to check out episode 9 in S1, now! :) But thank you for the kind words and comment! I'm SO hyped for Titan Week, too! It was exhausting to record everything, but so worth the brain melt!

Be Happy

You are very welcome, I took this liberty to share the info with you because I know through your discussions that you love to timeline events to understand better. And as it is no spoiler and doesn’t impact the plot, so ☺️ Can’t wait for the finale + the recap 😁

romaniablack

Absolutely!! I'm soooo excited for Season 4! The finale is so good this season and oooohhh...that recap....**shakes head** insanity. :)

Nathan Hardy

I always thought "Attack Titan", while a cool misnomer and meta reference, would have benefited from a more specific branding. Maybe "On Its Own Program Titan", or the "I Answer To Fucking No One Titan"? The Attack Titan doesn't give a shit about bowing in deference to the Fritz/Reiss family, which is why it does its own thing. Or maybe the "Unsuccessful Attack Titan", cause pretty much everytime Eren foolishly rushes in, he gets p0wned?!? 😂

romaniablack

Hahaha, at least that would fit Eren from season 1, eh? :P I like that the title can refer to a number of things...Isayama's a master of layers -- with characters, with plot points, and now with the title of his own series. @_@

Trung Ta

I know right? You also mentioned that Armin took the fact that he only lives 13 years kind of well. I mean, why wouldn't he? It's the best case scenario for him. Either that or die right where he was on top of a roof burned to crisp. If I was dying and having even 1 more year to live I'd be grateful.

romaniablack

Oh, absolutely! And it paints an interesting contrast with Armin -- granted 13 more years to live, to Eren, whose life is reduced down to 7-8 more only.

Toni simi

I find it fascinating how Akayona and Aot have similiarities when it comes to the powers. I totally see the similiarities between Erwin and Kruger. And I get why you like him that much. Kruger is really intriguing. I have those dreams that then happen excactly the same too. So it's believable that Kruger somehow has memories about Armin and Mikasa since they are linked. If we go with that Kruger actually had memories of Armin and Mikasa and it wasn't just Eren's and Grisha's memories that got melted together, it would totally make sense why Grisha took Mikasa in. Ymir's regret being not having married Historia was too much for me. She was such a badass. It's so sad we had to lose her. Wish you a wonderful day!!

romaniablack

I'm glad I'm not the only one that likes Kruger; he's great! And I'm not the only ones with dreams like that! @.@ I wonder if Isayama experiences the same thing... The aspect with the memories is fascinating and I'm curious if we'll explore that in Season 4. And UGHHHHHHHH, Ymir's regret is so damn sad. I wanted her to marry Historia at that point. Props to Reiner for getting that letter to Historia as her last request. "They're even now, indeed." Thank you for the kind words and have a wonderful day, too!

Julie

Just wanted to mention in case no one has yet, that this was the episode named after the series “Shingeki no Kyoujin” means Attack Titan. Attack on Titan is the official English name (and it’s a much better name), but Attack Titan is the actual name of the show. Epic episode that deserves the title.
