I thought there was only pre-Warrior and post-Warrior back in season two...no, there is really only Pre-That Day and Post-That Day in Attack on Titan.

Isayama took his time in three seasons to prepare this bomb for us, and I have a feeling there's still more bombs to go off...but...FINALLY. ANSWERS. Still many questions left to be answered, but I cannot fully express how elated, excited, and hyped I am now that I know the titan lore and everything is tying all together after so many episodes...**victory screeches**

If you sit through this entire discussion, give yourself a cookie. A medal. Something. Whiteboard-kun and I had a lot of fun with this episode, and we still have two more for the season... **nervous chuckle**

Thank you for listening to my ramblings, and for the support!

The truck

So.. remember in.. recap was it? I honestly forgot when it was. But you were wondering why Grisha was in the walls, why was he decided to say there, and all that similar stuff. you used the word paradise, can't remember the exact wording anymore, but you wondered if "Grisha had found a paradise in the walls with Carla." beautifully tragic right? :D edit: me is very proud of myself for watching the whole video on one sitting, (minus the 10min meal break, but that doesn't count)

Cheatsheet of important info to keep in mind as the series progresses. 1. There are two races the story focuses on. Eldians and Marleyans. Eldians are the ONLY race that have the power to turn into Titans because of their ancestor Ymir. The Eldians are currently being oppressed and discriminated against by the Marleyans as punishment for the ethnic cleansing they used to practice. 2. The 3 walls, and the show we've known up until now, are located on an island called Paradis where the first king retreated after the Eldian Empire was defeated by Marley. 3. Everyone OUTSIDE Paradis believes that Eldians are "spawn of the devil" and that they all deserve to die for the horrible things the Eldian Empire perpetuated. They are feared because they can turn into Titans if injected with titan spinal fluid. Imagine if some of the Nazis/Taliban/some other horrible group of people suddenly retreated to a remote island and went radio silent for 100 years. Now imagine that those Nazis could also turn into man eating monsters. 4. The Paradis Eldians are obviously unaware because the King of the Walls has been erasing their memories. 5. Grisha CHOSE TO BELIEVE that history was wrong and that Ymir was actually a benevolent figure and not the Devil that Marley says she is. It's important to remember that this is NOT confirmed to be the truth. As per his own admission in the episode, he can't read the historical texts and just CHOOSES to think this because he wants to believe in his ancestor. 6. The "Warriors"; Reiner, Bert, Annie, Zeke, etc. are actually Eldians who, among other personal reasons, have become Marleyan Warriors in exchange for having their families status upgraded to "Honorary Marleyan". They were sent to Paradis to crush the "devils" and retrieve the Founding Titan as a pretext for Marley needing to obtain the fossil fuels on the island. 7. Zeke, the Beast Titan, is Eren's half-brother. This means Zeke has royal blood since his mother Dina was a descendant of the royal family left outside Paradis. 8. Grisha and Dina attempted to use Zeke as a tool to restore the Eldian Empire to it's former glory. However, they only saw him as a means to an end, failed to love him as their son, and Zeke turned them in. His motives are still unclear, but this explains Zeke's empathy for Eren in S3 E18 when he promises to "rescue him". 9. Dina Fritz, Grisha's former wife, was the Smiling Titan.

I love that! I can't believe that Paradis is the name of the island/kingdom this whole time...and after seeing Grisha's backstory, yeah, it makes sense why he was fine with Carla inside the walls...the CHILLS! @.@

Yuuuuuppppp, you condensed my three-hour rant into this! Hahahaha!! I should just post this in the description and say, "don't watch my ramblings; read this instead!" XD I appreciate it! INSANITY, RIGHT?! I do think your #3 is interesting because I had talked about Marley being the Nazi-like state, with forcing the Eldians to wear the armbands, etc. but your comment flips it -- which is the craziness of it all, because Isayama shows that both the Marleyans and the Eldians have at some point viewed each other - and still do to an extent - through the same lens..."Who's the Enemy?" "Who knows?" BRILLIANCE! :) Thanks for the comment!

Yup, now we all know the true identify of the Titan that ate Eren's mom, Dina Fritz Yeager aka the Jealous Wife Titan. Cause let's face it, when she went to see Grisha and saw Carla, she went "You fucking my man, biaytch?!?!" Chomp Chomp! Finally, we learn the truth, the moment we've all been waiting for, the question on the forefront of everyone's mind, the origin of ... Santa Claus Titan! 🎅 While villified by Eren and friends as such, Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie were never traitors trying to eradicate Humanity. They're Marley commandos called the Warriors, a unit of Eldian children weaponized as Titans. They're literally persecuted Jews forced to become Nazi SS, cause only Eldians can become Titan shifters. Zeke, the Harambe Titan, is their commanding officer. That's why they ranked so high in the 104th Cadet Corps, they were already veteran assault troopers, not raw recruits. But they truly thought of Eren as a friend their entire time in the 104th. It wasn't until Trost when they saw Eren as a titan when they took interest in him. Through a process of elimination (there were only 2 other Titans Marley didn't have), figured 50/50 he was their objective. Turns out, he sure was. Knowing this truth brings some terrifying implications to light, back to Episode 13 when Zeke and all of those titans transformed. When you see the Survey Corps approach Shiganshima, you see them pass a little mound of dirt with a tube sticking out of it. Now you know the context, they were captive Eldians, bound and buried alive with just enough airflow to keep them alive, at key strategic locations. Then they were all turned into Titan weapons... This bombshell that they aren't the last of Humanity, but rather an ethnic race that can turn into Titans, changes everything. Oh, and also that the entire world, the rest of Humanity, hates them for it. The Walls were never meant to keep the Titans out, they were meant to keep the Titans IN! 😲

I love watching it all come together 😎 (kronk quote?) Most of the turned restorationists can be seen in the early episodes 1-5, the old man was the one who ate Armin/Eren, the creepy brown haired short dude ate poor Mina, and various others are visible throughout. We’re really getting to the nitty-gritty now! I’m looking forward to the end of this season and the beginning of Season 4 ♥️

Loco Logic

Many other reactors after this episode: This is way too confusing! Nothing makes sense anymore. Romania after this episode: My third eye has been opened! EVERYTHING is making sense now! Seeing your detective skills in action (all 3 hours!) really is fun to watch lol

And this is when things officially officially get real in AOT 😀 this episode and the next solidified this series as one of my favourites in any medium and a story with the best foreshadowing and attention to detail ever. It took 11 years for Isayama to write and complete the manga and this point was about 8-9 years in and still - everything earlier on had a purpose. No plot holes at all - usually some stories that really build on things for that long can completely go off the rails and not make sense at all but this isn’t the case with AOT. All the crazy reveals, confirmations and the much needed episode of insane exposition was of course followed by a wonderful 3-hour discussion and it’s actually really good to continuously watch someone paying attention to everything and using their brain and logic to connect the dots- out of all the creators out there, you are one of the very few capable of doing this and keeping it so engaging throughout. Now that we have some of the cards on the table, you are in for a great journey in Season 4 (Part 1 of which is probably my favourite out of all but P2 will be even better having read the manga). All the build up and the crazy events so far have been leading us all to the Final Season which does for sure deliver!

The Weird Pianist

Fun fact: The world map of Attack on Titan is actually the same as our world but turned upside down and mirrored from left to right. And if you look at the map they showed you'll realize that the Paradis island is actually Madagascar and Marley is in Africa. Also, I hate to correct you but Paradis is pronounced like Paradee. It's French for paradise and s is silent. Also the Marley uniforms look kinda like old gendarmerie uniforms. Oh and Ymir in Norse mythology is the first ice giant and the first being. Speaking of Ymirs. We saw that inside the walls they have Ymir Fritz's story as a tale for kids. Frieda was shown reading it to Historia before we saw her delete her memories of her. Except her name in the book is changed to Krista. So the funny thing is that both Ymir and Historia had their names changed to that of Ymir Fritz which makes them even more similar. Also, if I remember correctly, Frieda was saying that in the book Krista is a good person and helps everyone or something like that.

romaniablack

Yesssss, it's insane to see those original titans in the first few episodes were restorationists...I just....*shakes head* I can't believe how Isayama planned all this out. And me too! Season 4 is nigh! Insanity!!

romaniablack

Hahahahahaha!! Oh, thank you so much! YES! Confusion was not my reaction to this episode -- it was FINALLY getting the answers we've been waiting for and I couldn't love it more! Thank you for the kind words an for listening to my ramblings! :) I'm glad y'all had fun with them!

Trung Ta

Isayama: I’m gonna make Grisha into one of the most impactful and interesting characters of the story. Also Isayama: Let’s kill him 2 episodes in.

Moth (GreenAppleSause)

... I feel like we warned you. And then it's just going to get batshit from here. I don't even really have words, just that this is not going to be sane from here. Not that this series ever was. The Yeager brothers got some weird parental trauma, not that they can help it at this point. Still... therapy. Everyone needs therapy.

PS

Great post discussion. The reason why Grisha's father taught him the history was that the Marley guard asked if he had taught him the right history. Eren's titan, Grisha's titan and the Zeke's titan all have the pointy elf type ears. Bertholt has called the Armin the spawn of the devil, but he never refers to the people in the Walls as the evil race, which Reiner does, Annie does neither.

One thing that always strike'd me was Gross's speach at the wall about how people feel this "need" for cruelty and "horror" when they live in relative peace. The dialogue between him and Grisha is almost a direct hit to the viewer and Gross do speak looking directly to the "camera", talking to us. Grisha's question about the pleasure on watching people being eaten by titans can also be asked to us that watch the show. And also strikes me how we are so grossed out of Gross's speach on how he can reason and accept giving people to titans and then, a little later, we cheer for when he is thrown to the titan. In a way the show call us out for our hypocrysy and double standards the same way Gross create this double standards for Eldians and Marleyans.

I know I'm a day late commenting this, but the joy I felt when you compared the Titans to old mythology was perfect for me. There are few reactors who actually consider the comparison which is understandable because AoT is it's own original story, but Isayama has a perfect way of adding little hints from different mythologies in it. :) Thank you for your reactions and long discussions as always!

Well, this was one of the REDACTED episode numbers I though might hit the 2 hours mark (in the comments to ep 12). I did not expect well over three hours... but it was very welcome and did not disappoint. Almost beat the season 2 recap in length. The Mar- connection does not seem to bode well. I don't think this was ever confirmed or asked, but my pet theory is as follows: Marley is written Mare in Katakana, which is also the Italian word for 'sea', and Eldia may well be Erdia, very similar to the German word Erde 'earth, soil, land'. We see plenty of German and Italian names and influences throughout the series. Marley is not only beyond the sea, it and Eldia are also as different yet inherently linked as land and sea. Massively hyped for 21 on Saturday and the start of the main story a week later. The prologue is almost over...

The episode you've been waiting for since the beginning!😎🙌🏽⭐ANSWERS LOL I'm so happy you finally know the huge part of the story. Btw love the shirt! The brutal truth of this story omg😭 I had a major brain melt when I first watched this lol I couldn't wait to watch reactions to this so I could fully understand WHAT THIS ALL MEANS!!😭😂It was very overwhelming but yes this changes everything. Grisha my guy very complex character but he kept fighting till the end. I get chills everytime I watch this episode. Poor Grisha & his sister. Poor Eldians. Crazy how we knew nothing about Grisha now he's one of the most fascinating/interesting characters in the show with this being his story as much as Eren's & the others. WHITE BOARD KUN THANK YOU!! Very helpful & when you introduced white board kun I was like yes she's gonna need it for THIS episode alone!!😭😭😭I had so much to say but I watched your reaction a few days ago & forgot my thoughts. You mentioned so many great points too. Now you see why everyone hyped up Season 3 lol you get answers but then again they were always there throughout the series. FREAKING DINA WHOLE TIME THO! I had a life crisis with that reveal. I legit paused the show for 20 minutes freaking out😂🏃🏽‍♂️When Eren kills her, rewatching that scene is never the same anymore. I was happy at first but now it's just pain😭I always get emotional about the realization that not only is this so much deeper with ALL OF THIS (Remember we were scared of Titans & only Titans😂💀🏃🏽‍♂️)but the fact that Bertholdt, Reiner, Annie & many Eldians are taught to hate there own people so they're literally fighting eachother. In another life they would've been friends😭 It pains me that what Grisha went through all of that & ZEKE U WERE RIGHT!! This story really made me appreciate this story of war. I thought it was horror at first but it always changes throughout & now it's the harsh reality of Humanity, History, War & so much more. It's by far my favorite war story because I love fantasy as well & I've never been so attached to characters since GOT & TWD💀anyway I just love everything about this show, story, characters, world building, soundtrack, the powerful voice actors. It's truly an experience. This story will stick with me for a long time. Can't wait to watch Part 2 so I can read the Manga when it's all over. (I'M PANICKING THINKING ABOUT AN ENDING TO AOT LIKE....NO!!😭) Very happy your on this journey with us. Thanks for giving it a chance. (Sorry for this book I've created😭I didn't know it was this long😅)

I just noticed that Grice is voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki, the seiyuu von Makoto in free. And so the story gets even more fucked up. Again. It's amazing how so many titans we saw in the first season are actually characters we get later on. When Berthold and Armin had the little conversation a few episodes ago Berthold told Armin they're not devils and didn't do anything wrong. Since he was there for so long he probaly realized that what they've been tought was wrong. But at this point he pretty much didn't had much of a choice but to keep going on with the mission. So many things makes so much sense now. This episode gave us all the parallels possible. If someone's name starts with an Ma I don't believe they will live for long in this series. XD Wish you a wonderful day!!

This was so mind blowing the first time I watched it. Even the photograph and revelation about a wealthy society outside of the walls surprised me. But they just dump the info onto you in buckets. You did well not to have a mind melt lol. Interesting note about translation I noticed. When Eren wakes up, he doesn’t actually say “who am I?” He just says “I…” Then “why?” When he realized where he is. But he doesn’t use his usual pronoun “Ore” when he says “I”. He uses “Watashi” which was the pronoun Grisha used. It’s usually used by women and professionals and Eren would never normally use it. That’s what Armin asks him about. “Who am I?” was a decent translation. But I think what he really said was more subtle and interesting. Like he actually was in Grisha’s personality in the moment he woke up.

Be Happy

Oh yeah, Grisha Jaëger happy diary with all the happy childhood events , peaceful life and no family drama at all. This episode broke the internet on 2019 and there were such a shock wave from the audience at some points I expected sit ins to mourn our mental health 😂😂😂 It’s true that the story has shifted forever after this episode ( and here we all thought S02 ep 06 was THE EPISODE 😉). I joined your Patreon today cause I couldn’t wait for the upload of this specific episode in YT and also because I enjoyed your journey very much. And I wasn’t disappointed with your reaction, I thought for a moment you were going to have a meltdown😂😂 and I wouldn’t blame you, most of us did 😁.

Be Happy

I also wanted to talk about some points : the line of Reiner when he Broke down on top of the wall at ep 6 S02 "we were just kids .. we didn't know anything" it took another dimension and man it hits hard .. Also you're right the number 9 in AOT is uber important : the 1st chapter has been published on september 09 , 2009 (09/09/09) . in the 1st chapter when Eren woke up , there were 9 branches in the tree under which he was, when Ymir woke up after eating Marcel, the vision in the sky was 8 lines attached to the central brach (the founding)...etc Also when you watch season 1 second ED behind Eren and Mikasa, there is a drowing in the wall representing Paradis and Marley with sea in between and cannons in each side... and in the second season ED , when we see the line of peaple marching in what resembles a desert , it was King Fritz fleeing from the continent to go and live in the Island !! and those are only things I thought about in the moment, there is so much more hiding hints and easter eggs throughout the previous seasons !!

Be Happy

I am sorry for flooding you with comments :) but I m writing at the same time as listening to your discussion and I am extremely happy that you understood Zeke predicament when brainwashed with the propaganda and anti propaganda from his parents, or as Grisha said he has never thought of him as just His son Zeke but only as the wonderchild with royal blood that will save Eldia , which would destroy a child's psyche !! most reactors dont pay much attention to this sequence and label Zeke directly a snitch (which I understand because most are still grieving Erwin and the scouts deaths caused by the beast titan) but my God Zeke is such a fascinating , complex and layered character and first I was frustrated when Levi couldn't kill him but as the story goes we understand why Isayama spared him then.

romaniablack

I love the symbolism with the number 9 in this series -- I'm sure more hints will show up, but that's so cool! :) And YES, the line "we were just kids" takes on SUCH a more dark and sinister meaning after this episode!

romaniablack

Oh no worries -- I'm VERY intrigued with where the story takes Zeke! No spoilers of course, haha, but his character is VERY interesting...he doesn't quite sit "well" with me, yet, but I know Isayama's not done with him, so I'm reserving judgement. But yes, he's clearly troubled and his child's psyche has been damaged and destroyed from both sides...it's so sad, really.
