I accidentally watched this OVA first, but that's okay...because now I just have about a DOZEN more questions to add to my thoughts on what the heck is happening in this show!

This opens up a HUGE can of worms on titan lore, and what/who/where the heck Ymir is...so...there's THAT!
*No Spoilers, Please!* Hahaha!

Just the kind of questions to get us prepped for Season Two, right?!

Thank you for watching and for the support!

I'm not sure i fully agree about your take on Erwin. He doesn't communicate well, or rather, he doesn't give much space for debate. It seems like Levi is the only one able to talk back to him in a meaningful way. But Hange is legit crazy, kinda. She's entertaining for us, but her ideas are reckless, which i believe is part of why Erwin wants her around. She takes risks to attain knowledge, because she believes it to be the best way forward, but otherwise doesn't seem to have much concern about people getting hurt, if it means finding useful information. Think about it this way: What is a life worth ? Would you sacrifice a person to eliminate a disease in the future ? I believe Hange would. Would you sacrifice a 100 people ? I believe Hange would. Would you experiment on humans not knowing if it was potentially harmful ? I believe Hange would. If it was up to Hange, they would have continued to try and capture more specimen at the cost of more casualties. Maybe it is because of the simple fact, that with too many casualties no operation can be run (we know that volunteer numbers for the Scouts are low to begin with and nobody can just be assigned to be a Scout instead of becoming part of the garrison - kinda the default, if one doesn't qualify for the Military Police), but apparently Erwin was NOT willing to sacrifice more of his people for something that yielded little to no results thus far in the grand scheme of things. Ilse's notebook, if it is to be believed and not just the ramblings and embellishments of a starving/dehydrated, potentially sick and definitaly freaked out individual - I believe we get to see what Hange imagines the situation having been like, not how it exactly happened. Erwin, whatever his believes and assumptions about the notebook, recognizes it's importance on the offchance, that the contents are genuine, and only then gives his permission to recommence, because the value might be greater than a couple people's lives after all. My point being: At the very least, between Erwin and Hange, Erwin is MUCH more concerned with his people, maybe because he shoulders the blame in the end, because he has to sign off on whatever Hange comes up with, so she can always deflect (i don't mean to sound its o negative, but can't come up with a more neutral word) blame as it ultimately isn't her choice, whether to go through with the idea or not. Also, i have comprised a few short cliffnotes from Wikipedia as to who or what "Ymir" is. I believe it to be unrelated to AoT, but ofc feel free to skip that part entirely, if you think it would color your perception or give you a hint as to why the author chose "Ymir" in particular. The following bracket will only contain general information to the best of my knowledge and is heavily edited/summarized by me and will not contain anything else on any other topic or how it might or might not relate to AoT. So again, feel free to disregard it. I'll mark the section as a SPOILER, just in case. So, here goes nothing: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ymir is the name of a creature from nordic mythology. According to Wikipedia, it is thought to be the ancestor of all trolls/giants. From what i understand the distinction between the two is made, but not clearly defined, though more strictly seperated from other non-humans like elves and dwarves, and it varies from source material to source material in how much if at all the two are related, thus Ymir potentially only being the ancestor of one or the other. It might be noteworthy that Ymir is both male and female at the same time and doesn't require a partner to reproduce, as thus the name is unisex. Some nordic gods had relationships with beings like Ymir, though i am not sure whether Ymir actually had one or even many. What i gather though, is that Ymir is ancient indeed and in fact considered primordial and was involved in the creation of the world of the nordic mythology in some capacity. I didn't bother with all the offspring and references to other topics. If you've read this far, and feel like looking it up on Wikipedia for yourself, i believe that you'd more of the same or variations of what i transcribed. Have fun reading as much or as little as you want into it.

Thank you for the spoiler tag! I appreciate that, haha! I found over the course of this last week that my views on Erwin have been thrown all OVER the place -- between Episodes 20 - 25 of Season One, and then with Ilse's Notebook and No Regrets -- especially No Regrets; that OVA helped me really get a better appreciation for Erwin's character. You definitely bring up a good point on Hange -- we really only see her put herself in harm's way in front of the titans for the sake of research, but she probably wouldn't care if people died, so long as she got her specimen. It'll be curious to see if we get into any of those situations in the later seasons, but you bring up a good angle. I definitely respect (and want to give him a hug) Erwin as a leader -- he has to make some HARD choices, especially in the Survey Corps where the stakes are high and the cost is great. There are times in season one where he's so hard to read -- and I suppose that's the point -- and No Regrets I'll talk more about it. He makes decisions that sacrifice a lot of people and are big risks, especially the plan to take Annie in the last episodes. But that's kind of the name of the game, right? He's realized the enemy is willing to risk it all for the sake of victory, so what should their side do if not the same? Erwin leaves me wanting more -- I feel that a character like Pyxis is in a similar mindset as Erwin (not afraid to ditch their own humanity for the sake of saving it), but Pyxis isn't afraid to leave his own men in charge to choose the right decision -- like with Ian in Episode 12/13. Erwin doesn't seem as inclined to let his subordinates do the same, unless it's Levi, but I could be wrong -- and it could be I haven't seen him fully in the series, so I'm speaking prematurely. :) The thesis of this Ted Talk: I want in Erwin's brain. I want to know what he's thinking. Show, let this happen. Haha! :D Thanks for the comment and the debate!! :D

SpaceMonkey

Looking forward to No Regrets then and i think it's a safe bet to assume you'll have a decently sized segment on him in the recap, haha.

daragh faro

"Hange, what's your type?". I could imagine it being a titan.

romaniablack

I don't want to hype up the recap video, because I'm afraid it won't meet expectations...I literally rambled and reacted for nearly two hours and I felt I rushed through everything...I have a feeling I'm going to be talking with you in the comments on what I didn't get a chance to elaborate on! There's just SO MANY things to talk about. @_@

romaniablack

HA! I kind of view Hange now as Asexual...or Hange x Science, hahahaha! She'd want to dissect the titan; maybe not take it out to dinner, haha!

SpaceMonkey

I'm hyped as is :D And yeah, i mean, people have been talking about Season 1 for 4 years. You could do a whole week of videos to just recap and read into it and it wouldn't remotely come close to the stuff people conjured up over the years - I'm not even sure i would be able to give you an accurate picture of how insane theories were and how much fun it was to read that stuff even if it was nothing more than fan fiction in the end. Though i think manga readers had a blast laughing at us anime-onlys. So of course some things have to be cut short for the sake of time. I am more curious about what stuck with YOU, that is kinda the deal with reaction channels isn't it ? Experienceing something you already like anew through fresh eyes ? I must admit, i already saw on your MAL that you gave AoT S1 a 10/10. I'm kinda happy that you are SO into it already, considering a lot of people hype up the later seasons way more as you already were able to see :) So no worries, you couldn't possibly disappoint.

romaniablack

Oh, thanks for the kind words on that! I completely agree -- I could talk for 30 minutes with each episode, and the recap video, and I'm STILL thinking of more things to talk about...I can imagine how the fandom kept busy for 4 years. I'm a little glad I'm not waiting that long in between seasons -- I think I would get buckled down with a theory, and then disappointed when it was proven wrong. So far, though, all of my theories that have been wrong have been disproven with the canon being better than I could have hoped for, so there's that. And YES! I absolutely LOVED season one -- and when everyone said it was the "basic" season, that's gotten me really excited, because I love when shows build and keep amping up -- so me being excited and hyped is an understatement! :) I can't wait to talk with you all about everything!

Toni simi

I've heard about the titan before but to watch the OVA was so interesting. I actually didn't expect it to be that good. It was really intense.

romaniablack

Right?! I was floored by how intense it all was, even when you knew she was going to die -- this show spares no expense being gruesome!
