This episode was a such a BEAUTIFUL self-contained story! I REALLY love Leon's character and how he slowly opens up towards Violet. And Violet's reveal of just how deep her love of Gilbert is -- I appreciate we're talking not just about sexual/romantic love in this episode, but also the power of parental love as well. There are LAYERS to love, darn it!

Their conversations were SO good in this episode, with the symbolism of the comet and the relationship that developed between these two. I can only hope their meeting isn't a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence!

Not sure if this is a spoiler, but there are some differences in how the chapter of the light novel this episode corresponds to plays out. In particular, Leon actually confesses when seeing Violet off. Seeing how Violet handles that is interesting. I would definitely recommend reading the light novel once you've finished the anime.

Honestly, one of my least favorite episodes in the series. I think the fact that we just skipped over the end of the last episode still doesn't sit well with me either. But imo you can appreciate the choices of when and how we see things more on rewatches, so i think i've softened up to the episode over the years. But it is as important a stepping stone as any other. I'm glad you saw the parallel between Violet and Leon's mother in particular. A lot of people miss that. This is also the first brush with a negative emotion for Violet, even if just recognized through Leon's help. Of course the conversation gets cut off when it comes to very positive emotions or love in particular (quite heavy handedly imo), so she is not fully ready for that yet, the smile from ep5 will have to do, i guess. Though interestingly imo she still has an emotional advantage over Leon when it comes to love. She doesn't know that she is feeling love, but is able to accept and express it, so others can recognize it as such, while Leon is bogged down by his past and thinks love is for fools. It is him rationalizing that taking a chance isn't worth it, because it is unlikely to succeed (like a hopeless search for a husband after he was already gone for two years for example). He is so hurt and hung up over the fact that he got abandoned over, well, nothing, if the result is anything to go by. Yet Violet expresses that she would act much in the same way and that there is absolutely no doubt about it. An emotionless rational and smart person acting like a fool ? The realization that you can let feelings guide you is quite nicely done imo. Would i abandon my child to set out on a journey to find my partner who might already be dead ? Would i abandon my child for any reason ? Is that a bad parent ? But what about "follow your heart/dreams !!!" ? Changing the perspective reveals the shallowness of platitudes like that as they can be twisted and turned any way one wants to. I appreciate the depth that usually isn't brought up about being a parent. Most media just portrays good parents as unconditional supporters that are just there when the situation calls for it, and sure, that might be a good intention usually, but in reality it's always a balancing act. The fact that his mother (and Leon's feelings towards her) isn't depicted nearly as negatively as she could have been is probably my favorite thing about this episode.

Leon's va is Yuuto Uemura. He has voiced the following roles: Tamaki Amajiki (My Hero Academia), Atsushi Nakajima, (Bungou Stray Dogs), Jirou Jou (Run with the Wind), , Minato Kiyomizu (Re:Main), Minato Narumiya (Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu), Fred Porlock (Moriaty the Patriot).

It's crazy that Atsushi, Tamaki, and one of the twins shares the same voice! I need to go back and re-watch Run With the Wind so I can hear it (this will give me an excuse hahaha)! :D VERY excited for Moriarty the Patriot to hear him! :D

OOOH! I need to read the light novel, definitely! I wonder -- I doubt there's an English translation officially out -- I'll have to try and find an English fan translation to read when I'm done with the anime! Thank you for that info! That has me really excited!

Oh wow, really?! I definitely understand with the ending of the last episode dropped (for now) -- I really wanted conclusion that ending scene from Episode 5, but I was happy with this episode as a stand alone adventure, too. I like your second paragraph there -- I love that we can see that Violet is very much capable of all emotional range, she just isn't sure what those emotions are, but she can express them and others pick up on them as well. I love her conversations with Leon and how they both help each other throughout this episode! :3 Yeah, I like that the mother and Violet are portrayed in a similar light and Violet's perspective serves to teach Leon why his mother may have chose the path she did -- I really respect that the show is giving us all of these perspectives on love and the consequences of loving someone and how it maneuvers the choices one makes in other aspects of their lives. I really liked this episode for what it did, but I'm with you -- I want to see where Violet goes to from here and if she confronts Diethard again....Hmmm...Thanks for the comment! :D

It's true that there isn't an official translation as far as I'm aware, but the one available here is pretty decent: https://dennou-translations.tumblr.com/post/159331691639/violet-evergarden-novel-index. The chapters' translations include the official artwork as well.

Oh thank you so much!! :D I'm so excited to read it once I'm done with the anime! <3

I've actually not read the light novel as i'm not an avid reader in general. But i'd be interested in hearing more about the differences between the anime and novel. Would you consider doing videos on that ? Maybe it is a bit too niche to dedicate a lot of time to it though. A discussion stream perhaps ? Depending on how you would want to do it, and if it works out timewise, maybe combine it with an end of series stream ? Though it might be a lot to ask to read a whole story in what i'd assume to be a relatively short period of time for something like that. So consider me ignorant on how to do that kind of thing, since i'm also not a content creator ^^. Just here to express my interest.

SpaceMonkey

Yes, "emotional range". I think that is a very good way of expressing what i meant. Not a native speaker, so i couldn't think of that expression. English can be hard at times :D

Danu P

@SpaceMonkey The light novel isn't a long read, so I'd still recommend you experience it for yourself. To date, it's also the only entry to ever win the grand prize in the Kyoto Animation Awards, which is to say it's pretty good.

romaniablack

@SpaceMonkey I would totally be up for an "update" video after reading the light novel and talking about differences, changes, etc. with it! I would love to be able to read the light novel in time for the livestream, so I might start reading it as I get closer to the end of the series, to give myself time. :) However it ends up happening, I'll definitely want to talk about it! Thanks!

2021-11-14 20:04:22 One of my favorite episodes. I just love Leon's character so much. Just a pure episode. That's so hard to lose your family & for years hoping & waiting for them to return as if his life has been paused there for so long. I'm happy Violet gave him the courage to move forward with his life & that he still chose to be a traveler in the end. The comet was beautiful too.

Yessss! This is definitely in my Top 5! I love Leon so much as well! :) The connection made between Leon and Violet and the parental love given to them was sooo great! :) The comet, Leon's decision to explore the world, his little crush on Violet -- such a good episode! One of my favorite stand alone episodes in the series! :)
