Loved the reaction and discussion! These episodes are so dense and I have to repeat myself – I’m really glad I saved this to watch along, and watching it right after Monster definitely enhances it for me. It is also SO beautiful to look at – I often have to pause to just appreciate the art of the environments and the colours! I love Helena’s demeanour, she seems like a wonderful partner for Gesicht. I’ve made it a game to see which Monster characters the designs remind me of – with the Marco Polo employee/avatar I instantly thought of Eva. I’m also really enjoying your game of “Are they a robot?!” - no one is free from suspicion. 😂 The idea of memory (the line “that’s what forgetting is for,” another character making a joke of robot memory being more accurate while we have the additional context for Gesicht, etc) and then that off-duty robot’s “Tenma” body being essentially possessed by Pluto - these really made me think that a lot of the story centres around soldiers coming back from war and the impacts of war-trauma related PTSD. It reminds me of stories set after a massive conflict where society has largely “moved on” but individuals continue to experience significant impacts of course, where others want to sweep this reality under the rug. The way they animated Epsilon’s and Tenma!Pluto’s eyes, especially the pain in their gazes was so evocative. But also getting “Tenma” with long wavy hair?! Thank you, everyone. 🥰 That scene of him “growing” the flowers? Loved it. I agree regarding the quite obvious markers of the robophobic aspects of the story, some of this could have been done differently. My Tolkien connection was the fact that the brief look at Pluto at the end looked like Balrog to me (especially the Jackson version). All the elements of this story are right up my alley, the depth of the characters (even the ones we get so briefly), the beautiful art – I’m really enjoying this. 🥰 Looking forward to next week. 💙

Yessss, the density of it makes it a lot to soak in, but I am really glad to have watched Monster before this, especially to have a better handle on the themes and storytelling Urasawa uses! Yes! This series really blurring the lines between human and robot! Oohhhh yeah, it’s really on the nose the concept of veterans coming back and acclimating back to “normal civilian” life after war – Urasawa’s theme there is not lost to us, right? The animation on the microexpressions with faces is soooo well done! Evocative is a great word for it! And hahaha, getting to see “rugged” Tenma with the flower growing? Agreed, 100%! Ohhhh the Balrog comparison with Pluto is REALLY. GOOD. Does that make Gesicht Gandalf? 😛 That could be interesting! I definitely am curious about where the series will go, especially with Pluto’s character, knowing the ending of Monster - it’s weird to have an antagonist NOT out in the open so often like Johan was…the mystery is intriguing!
