Chapter 35 – Battle Spectating and Planning

Ash was walking through Vermilion City with thoughts running through his mind. He was trying to form a Team of Pokémon that would help earn him the Thunder Badge from Lt. Surge. He had Phanpy, a Ground Type, that would be immune to Electric Type attacks. Lt. Surge definitely had strategies against his specialty’s only weakness though. He and Misty had gone over a few ideas already, but this would be his fifth Badge and he wanted to make sure he won. It would push him past the halfway point on required Badges to enter the Indigo League and that was a definite milestone.

“Still, Ground, Grass, Electric, and Dragon are the only ones that resist Electric Type attacks.” Ash mused to himself as he walked along. Misty had decided to spend the day with her grandpa since it had been so long since her last visit. Ash thought it was a good idea and the couple had parted with a kiss a while back.

Ash continued to walk and ponder while taking in some of the sights of the large port city in the process. He eventually wandered towards the large park and recreational area in the northeast of the city. As he was walking through the area, he naturally decided to pass by the Pokémon Battlefields that were set up for public use. When he got closer to the fields, he stopped in his tracks.

Aura…not a lot, but more than any regular person would have.’ Ash schooled his expression and began to look around without giving away that he was looking for something specific. ‘Whoever it is, they’re not even trying to hide it.’ He started walking again, letting his Aura senses guide him to the source. It didn’t take very long.

On the last battlefield was an older guy, maybe in his mid-twenties. He had messy brown hair, the kind that Ash’s mother would say looked like it's screaming for a hair brush. As Ash got closer, he saw the man’s emerald green eyes glance over to him. From this short of a distance the Aura Guardian noticed the man’s lightly tanned skin and the small horizontal scar under his right eye. He was dressed in robust clothing, thick khaki pants, a dark-green shirt and brown boots on his feet. The most notable thing about the older Trainer was the cuddle pile of Pokémon he was laying amongst.

The guy was relaxing among a variety of Pokémon. A Ninetales, a Pidgeot, a Gardevoir, an Umbreon, a Lopunny, and a large snake-like Pokémon that was mostly green and yellow. Ash racked his brain trying to remember what the semi-familiar Pokémon was called. It was clearly a Grass Type judging by the leaves on its tail.

Ah to hell with it.’ Ash pulled out his Pokedex and scanned the snake Pokémon.

“Serperior, the Regal Pokémon, it can stop its opponents' movements with just a glare. It takes in solar energy and boosts it internally. They raise their heads to intimidate opponents but only give it their all when fighting a powerful opponent. This Serperior is Female, Type Grass.” The Pokedex’s robotic voice doled out the Pokémon’s basic information.

“Right, they’re the Grass Type Starter from Unova.” Ash put his Pokedex away now that his curiosity had been sated. He continued to walk past the field. Ash’s amber eyes glowed with Aura for a bit as he looked at the unknown Trainer. To his Aura Sight, the man glowed with unlocked Aura. The color indicated Steel Type affinity, so that would make the man a Physical Aura User. ‘All of his Aura Nodes are open, so he unlocked his Aura properly. Why isn’t he keeping it controlled and suppressed like he should’ve been taught?

The Aura Nodes of the Human body were mostly shut off naturally. After hundreds of years of being inactive in the majority of the population, their bodies had switched them to a dormant state to save energy. Only through proper training could one open their Aura Nodes and become an Aura User. That, or they could be born into an Aura Guardian Family, like the Ketchum’s, who naturally had their Aura Nodes open from birth. There was another way to open Aura Nodes without the long training, but that was frowned upon because of the risk involved. An Aura User could, with proper control, pour their Aura into another person and open their Aura Nodes artificially. The chances of rupturing a Node in the process was high and that would lead to life-long discomfort or pain, if not outright disability depending on which Node or how many got damaged.

There is the chance, however small, that he’s one of the very rare few that’ve unlocked their Aura over time without trying.’ Ash considered as he cut off the Aura flow to his eyes. It would be exceptionally small chances, but it had happened before. A person that lived their life amongst Pokémon, day in and day out, may indeed slowly open their Aura Nodes over time. But for all of them to fully open properly was almost unheard of, with less than five-hundred confirmed cases throughout the history of Aura Users.

“Yo, you waiting long, Skyes?” A female voice called out and Ash turned to look at the person.

The woman in question was around the same age as the man, if Ash had to guess. She had raven black hair down to her shoulders and wore a dark-red jacket with a black shirt underneath. On her legs were black jeans and her feet sported dark-red shoes that matched her jacket. If Ash had an eye for brands and fashion, which he didn’t, he’d have noticed that the shoes were very expensive.

“So long that me and my Team started dozing off.” The older man joked with a lazy smile.

“Knowing you…that would’ve happened even if I’d been here earlier.” The woman scoffed with a shake of her head.

“Aww, don’t be like that Selina.” The man stood up as his Team either shook themselves awake or simply stood by his side. “You know you can call me Grey, right? I know I told you that before.”

“I’m aware,” Selina had a grin on her lips, clearly enjoying messing with the man. “So, are you ready to battle?” She pulled a Pokéball from her belt and enlarged it.

“Sure thing,” The man nodded before turning to his Team. “Mimi, you’re up!” The Lopunny strode onto the field with a happy cry and stood before Grey.

“Well, looks like I picked right.” Selina grinned as she took her place in the Trainer’s box and tossed her Pokéball with a laugh.

“GRRRRROOOOOONNNNNN!!!” With a loud roar that made Ash wince slightly from the volume, a behemoth of a Pokémon appeared from the white light of the Pokéball. It was a huge, bipedal Pokémon. The body of the large beast was primarily gray but with plates of silvery armor. The armor on its head sported two pairs of holes with horns protruding from the foremost set. Its forehead plating extended past its upper jaw in a sharp point.

“An Aggron.” Ash marveled at the Steel/Rock Type Pokémon from Hoenn.

“Going for resistance, eh Selina?” Grey chuckled at the Aggron that towered over his Lopunny. An average Lopunny stood at about 1.2 meters in height. His Mimi stood closer to 1.5 meters in height. That said, an average Aggron stood around 2.1 meters tall, but Selina’s clearly topped the charts since he’d estimate it to be closer to 2.7 meters.

“You wanna switch to a different Pokémon? I’ll let you.” Selina offered with a shrug.

“Nah, Mimi’s got this.” Grey shook his head and expressed his utmost confidence in his Pokémon.

“Let’s go then!” Selina declared and Ash happily sat on a nearby bench to watch the coming battle.

“Fake Out into Power-Up Punch!” Grey was quick to take the advantage of his Lopunny’s greater speed.

The Rabbit Pokémon, affectionately named Mimi, blurred forward and Ash quickly directed Aura into his eyes to keep up with the Normal Type. Mimi slapped both sided of Aggron’s head at the same time, making the behemoth flinch. The Lopunny’s fist was covered in an orange glow before she punched the Aggron in the face. The Normal Type’s body was covered in a red aura as her Attack increased.

“Head Smash!” Selina countered the two-hit combo with a powerful move.

“Agg!!!” Aggron roared as its armored head glowed with Rock Type Aura. The beast aimed the devastating attack down at Lopunny like a headbutt.

“Skip back!” Grey instructed and Mimi dashed back in three quick skips to stand in front of him again. The Head Smash still hit the battlefield and the whole area shook from the force. A plume of dust was thrown into the air and Ash heard the ground split.

“Stone Edge!” Selina called before the dust had even settled. A line of sharp stone burst through the ground at speed.

“Double Team and keep it up!” Grey countered and one Lopunny seemingly became dozens. The Stone Edge tore through two of the copies from the sheer size of the attack, but the copies were quickly replaced. More and more of the copies appeared just as the dust was settling from the earlier Head Smash. The entire battlefield was practically filled with Lopunny.

“Dodge this, Earthquake!” Selina knew how to deal with a Double Team.

“Gron!” Aggron flexed its powerful legs and slammed its massive tail into the ground. Ash grabbed the bench he was sitting on as the area shook. The battlefield shattered from the power of the Ground Type Move while Aggron roared at its opponent.

“High Jump Kick!” Grey thought quickly to both evade and counterattack. All of the copies leapt into the air before coming down on the Aggron with a foot glowing reddish-orange with Fighting Type Aura.

“Iron Defense!” Selina showed her own prowess as a Trainer by having her Aggron switch from offense to defense on the fly. The Steel/Rock Type hunkered down and its body was surrounded by a bright aura and appeared to shine. Its Defense had just increased two stages.

“They’re good.” Ash had a huge grin on his face as he saw the High Jump Kick from the real Lopunny slam into the Aggron. The ground depressed a bit under the mighty beast, but even a quadruple effective attack didn’t seem to have done that much damage. “Aggron have incredibly high Defense naturally. To increase that with Iron Defense means Lopunny needs to be able to hit harder than its species is known for.”

“Iron Head!” Selina’s next move was loud and clear. The still airborne Lopunny was knocked across the broken battlefield by the silvery-white, glowing armor of Aggron’s head. The Normal Type bounced twice before coming to a stop in the dirt.

“Mimi!” Grey called out to his Pokémon. “You alright girl?”

“Lo…Lopunny!” Mimi hopped back to her feet while shaking off the dirt from her fur.

“That’s my girl!” Grey beamed at her. “Ice Beam!”

“Pun!” Lopunny formed the bright blue orb of Ice Type Aur before launching the beam of frost at the Aggron. The attack struck, even as Aggron guarded against it. The Steel/Rock Type didn’t seem to be taking much damage, even as frost slowly covered part of its huge body.

“Lopunny’s Special Attack isn’t really high enough for that, is it?” Selina raised an eyebrow as Aggron took a step forward and the ice on its body cracked off.

“Lopunny’s Special Attack isn’t great.” Ash agreed from where he was sitting. “But…Aggron’s Special Defense isn’t anything to write home about either. Not to mention the chance to freeze.”

“Maybe not directly,” Grey grinned at Selina. “But things can add up.” He warned as Lopunny fired a second Ice Beam at the approaching Aggron, slowing it down as it dealt with the attack.

“Going for a freeze? Without an Ice Type using the move?” Selina let out a small snort. “That’s like halving the odds of it happening.” She shook her head and refocused. “Smart Strike!”

“Aggron!” Aggron roared as its horn glowed brightly with Steel Type Aura. The large beast launched itself forward at surprising speed.

“Double Team!” Grey went on the defensive as Lopunny made a dozen copies of herself.

“You can’t evade this!” Selina declared as Aggron unerringly turned and struck the real Lopunny among the fakes.

“Lop!!!” Mimi cried out from the powerful strike. She rolled along the damaged field for a moment before retaking her feet. She looked worse for wear now, that was for sure.

“Shall we wrap this up, Aggron?” Selina pointed at Lopunny.

“Agg!” Aggron rumbled in agreement.

“Mimi!” Grey called out as he pulled a necklace from within his shirt. Hanging from the small chain was a charm holding a round, rainbow-colored stone. If Ash’s enhanced eyes weren’t playing tricks on him, it appeared to have a symbol vaguely reminiscent of a DNA helix in it. That wasn’t mentioning the fact that the stone, much like an Evolution Stone, held Aura within it. “Let’s do it!”

“Lopunny!” Mimi called back while brushing some of her fluffy fur aside to show a metal bracelet on her wrist. It had a larger stone in it that was a mix of black, dark-brown, brown, and cream colors.

“What are they doing?” Ash wondered at the strange turn the battle had taken.

“Mega Evolution!” Grey declared and the two stones began to glow while Ash’s Aura enhanced eyes watched as Grey’s Aura took a massive drop. Lopunny’s Aura however flared up powerfully. Two winding beams of Aura leapt from the necklace that Grey had. They were mirrored by two matching beams emerging from the bracelet that Lopunny was wearing. When the four beams connected Ash witnessed something amazing.

“LOPUNNY!!!” Mimi practically roared as she was covered in light. The bright light was literally pure Aura! A gust was kicked up from the force and Ash could only watch in awe as Lopunny changed. The once large and fluffy ears thinned and became banded by tufts of yellow fur. The body slimmed down and became more toned with muscle. The legs gained black fur spotted with brown as they noticeably increased in muscle mass. Around the ankles were thick, yellow tufts of fur. The same could be said about the forearms as they were covered in thick yellow fur as well, almost like gauntlets. The fur on Lopunny’s head that was once long and straight had split to become a four-pointed tuft.

“Where the hell did you get that?!” Selina demanded while pointing at Grey.

“I went back home for a bit.” Grey chuckled as the Aura died down and the strange symbol appeared over his Lopunny in a myriad of colors before disappearing.

“Mega Evolution...” Ash had only heard of this before. It was supposedly only being studied fairly recently because of how rare it was to actually perform. ‘It seems to require a lot of Aura. If that’s the case, then it’s no wonder most people can’t do it.’ Speaking of Aura, the Aura Guardian noticed something peculiar about Lopunny besides its form change. “Its Aura…it’s shifted…there’s so much Fighting Type Aura now. Did it literally change Type?!”

“Meet Mega Lopunny!” Grey introduced his friend and opponent to the Mega Evolved Pokémon.

“You think I haven’t seen a Mega Evolution before?” Selina looked at Grey with a sigh. “Never fought it before though,” She gained a wide grin on her lips. “So, let’s go!”

“AGGRON!!!” Aggron roared at the Mega Lopunny in challenge.

“Lop!” Mega Lopunny growled back, itching for a fight.

“Whoa, talk about a personality shift.” Ash blinked at how aggressive Lopunny had become.

“Earthquake!” Selina called and once more Aggron torn the earth apart with violent tremors. Ash had to hold onto the bench to avoid ending up on the ground.

“High Jump Kick!” Grey countered the widespread attack just as they had done before.

“Pun!” Lopunny rocketed into the air with its powerful legs. The Mega Evolved Pokémon seemingly kicked off the very air as she came shooting down like a meteor. Her entire leg was glowing with reddish-orange Fighting Type Aura.

“Iron Defense double!” Selina called out and Aggron once more hunkered down into a defensive stance. The bright aura flared up around the Steel/Rock Type again. Before it could even begin to fade, it flared again, doubling in size. Aggron’s body shone like polished steel for a moment from the four stages it had just boosted its Defense by. It had literally maxed out its already ridiculously high Defense stat.

The impact was immense from the Mega Lopunny. Aggron sank half a meter into the earth from the force. A gale of wind rushed from the point of impact and whipped past Ash quickly. The powerful Fighting Type attack should’ve done plenty of damage to a Pokémon that was four times weak to the Type.

“Metal Burst!” Selina retaliated and Aggron’s entire body glowed before a blast went off. The area was rocked again and Ash was knocked off the bench he’d been sitting on. The sound was sound loud it made his ears pop and he could only imagine the amount of damage that Mega Lopunny must’ve taken.

“Mimi!” Grey tried to wave away the dust that had been thrown up from the Metal Burst attack. He didn’t know Selina’s Aggron had such a countermove. Dealing back 1.5 times the damage the Pokémon had just been dealt was nothing to scoff at when he’d just done a four times effective attack with a Mega Evolved Pokémon.

“Lop…punny…” Mimi was breathing heavily as she tried to get back onto her feet. She was clearly on her last legs and wouldn’t be able to maintain Mega Evolution much longer.

“Gron…” Aggron rumbled as it pulled itself from the crater it had made. There were noticeable cracks in its armor and rocky hide. The behemoth wasn’t in any better shape than Mega Lopunny.

“Mimi…can you blitz it?” Grey whispered to his Normal/Fighting Type.

“Lop.” Mega Lopunny nodded her head as she forced herself to stand upright.

“You’re amazing girl, we’ll get you healed up and a spa treatment after this, alright?” Grey promised with a proud smile.

“Aggron, can you keep going, buddy?” Selina asked her injured Pokémon with concern. It had been a long time since her big powerhouse had been taken to such low health.

“Agg!” Aggron thumped its large tail against the ground and stomped his feet.

“All the iron you want after this, you’ve earned it.” Selina smiled at her Pokémon. She giggled as she saw the wagging tail. Her Aggron was a bit of a glutton, always thinking with his stomach. Her bank account was going to take a hit from this little feast.

“Mimi, let’s go! Use Power-Up Punch!” Grey punched his own fist forward as Mega Lopunny dashed across the field.

“Head on against my Aggron? Really?” Selina didn’t look amused at the lack of strategy. “Head Smash!” Aggron’s head glowed with the Rock Type Aura once more as he charged forward.

“Using it twice…” Ash had retaken his seat and was watching the end of the battle. “Definitely has Rock Head to prevent recoil damage.”

“Pivot!” Grey called at just the right moment. Mega Lopunny neatly spun to the side as Aggron smashed its powerful attack into the ground and threw up more dust. “Go!” The Normal/Fighting Type’s fist both glowed with the orange light of Fighting Type Aura before she lashed out at the massive Steel/Rock Type.

The first punch connected, cracking an already damaged portion of armor. The red glow flared around Mega Lopunny as her attack went up a stage. The second Power-Up Punch did even more damage and broke part of the rock hide covering Aggron. A third punch was readied before Selina countered.

“Iron Tail!” Selina knew any attack would take down Mega Lopunny now. Aggron’s tail glowed and looked metallic as he swiped it in a wide 270-degree arc. Mega Lopunny leapt over the tail strike and the gust of wind it whipped up, but Selina and Aggron weren’t done yet. “Smart Strike!” The horns atop Aggron’s head emitted Steel Type Aura as he lunged forward.

“Hit it!” Grey encouraged his Pokémon. Mimi’s already primed fist slammed into the top of Aggron’s head with a loud thud. The beast slammed into the ground as the glow faded from its horns. The red aura flared over Mega Lopunny again, but no one paid it any mind

“Damn…” Selina sighed as she headed over to Aggron. The huge Steel/Rock Type had swirled out eyes and had clearly fainted. “You did great, buddy.” She gently patted her Pokémon and praised it for a hard-fought battle.

“Mimi!” Grey was by his Lopunny’s side as she fell out of her Mega Evolved form in a flash of light. He gently caught her in his arms and eased her to the ground. The rest of his team was quickly surrounding them and showing concern for their teammate. “You were amazing out there! Your Mega Evolution is really becoming something amazing.”

“Pun…” Lopunny gave a slight smile through her various injuries. “Ny…Lop?”

“Yes, yes, a spa treatment, just like I promised.” Grey chuckled as he held up her Pokéball. “Get some rest and we’ll have you to the Pokémon Center soon.” In a beam of red light, he recalled his Normal Type. He looked up just in time to see Selina recalling her Aggron.

“Well, you won that one.” Selina gave him a smile. “Next time we eat together, it’ll be on me.”

“I’m gonna choose somewhere fancy and eat a lot.” Grey grinned as he stood up and began recalling the rest of his Team.

“You better not.” Selina shot him a look. “I’ll do worse to your wallet the next time I win!” She promised with a vindictive look.

“You know I won’t.” Grey waved off with a chuckle. “I’m not overly much for fancy places.”

“Just text me when you want to meet up for lunch or dinner.” Selina rolled her eyes with a grin. She waved over her shoulder as she released a large Flygon and hopped onto its back. The Ground/Dragon Type’s wings buzzed before it shot into the air and headed towards the southern Pokémon Center in Vermilion.

“So, how’d you like the show?” Grey grinned as he walked off the destroyed field. He turned a smile to Ash as the younger Trainer stood up from the bench.

“It was amazing,” Ash was really trying hard not to gush. “I’ve never seen a Mega Evolution before.”

“Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.” Grey chuckled as the two fell into step together. “Had to go home to Kalos to get the Mega Stones, that was a trip.”

“Kalos, huh? That is pretty far.” Ash filed that bit of information away for later. “I’m Ash, by the way.”

“I lived in Johto for a couple of years too…but you can’t get Mega Stones in Johto.” Grey shrugged at the simple truth. “Grey Skyes, yes I know the joke, nice to meet you, Ash.”

“That lady was an awesome Trainer too.” Ash remarked and Grey laughed.

“Selina is a friend, we’re both Expert Level Trainers, so we get together for battles like that from time to time. It’s good training for our Pokémon.” Grey explained as he briefly looked in the direction that Selina had flown off in. “We have a standing deal that loser has to buy the winner a meal.”

“Oh yeah, I didn’t see you exchange any money for your win.” Ash realized that Selina hadn’t paid out the cash for her loss.

“It’s just friendly training, not a battle for cash, no big deal.” Grey waved off the idea of taking Selina’s money. “I can probably eat enough to make up for a one-on-one match anyway.” The twenty-something Trainer chuckled lightly.

“Are you a League Trainer?” Ash wondered if he’d be seeing Grey in the Indigo League.

“I’ve done that before, but right now I’m more of a Caretaker.” Grey replied with a smile. “I enjoy taking care of Pokémon, my own or wild ones. I grew up on a Pokémon Ranch and I’m honestly still deciding if I should take over for my parents or start my own.” He turned to look at Ash. “What’re you doing in Vermilion City? Trying to get the Thunder Badge?”

“Yeah, I’m still planning out my Team right now though.” Ash admitted with a small sigh. “Planning around Electric Types that only have a single weakness isn’t easy. Even more difficult when they’re a Gym Leader’s Pokémon.”

“True, true…” Grey nodded in agreement even as he relaxed his body. “Always take things as they go. As soon as you start to worry too much, you’re trapped in a spiral that will lead you to a dead-end. That goes for both battle and life.” He offered his own personal wisdom that he gained over his time as a Pokémon Trainer.

“Take things as they go, huh?” Ash thought about it.

“Things usually work out the way you want them to if you put in the effort.” Grey encouraged the teen as they entered the city proper again. “Not too much point in worrying about things before you’ve even tried, right?”

“Yeah, that’s not a bad way to look at it.” Ash was reminded a bit of his father in that regard. He usually rolled with things as they came up. Maybe he should approach his planning a little more relaxed. Perhaps the perfect Team would come to him while he was doing something else rather than constantly racking his brain for every scenario he could think up.

“Well, I’m headed this way.” Grey pointed to the left path at the fork they were approaching. “I have a Lopunny to get healed and then spoil her and the rest of the Team with a spa treatment.”

“It was nice to meet you, Grey.” Ash held out his hand to the older Trainer.

“Nice meeting you too, Ash.” Grey shook the teen’s hand with a smile. “I might just watch the Indigo League this year, so do your best.”

“I will.” Ash’s gaze was fierce with determination.

“Good luck in your Gym battle. I know you’ll come out the winner.” Grey tossed a wave over his shoulder as he headed towards the Pokémon Center.

“Thanks, later!” Ash waved before heading down the right pathway. He couldn’t wait to get back to Finn’s cottage. He had an amazing battle to recount to Misty and her grandpa! A Mega Evolution of all things! How amazing was that?! He picked up his pace a bit and jogged down the path with a bright grin.
