The white shade of Amaranth's skin and shirt looks a lot brighter than the background shade - but they're actually the same exact value. That's because values/colours look different depending on adjacent colours because they interact. The grey of Amaranth's skin looks lighter because it is contrasting the black directly next to it - as well as the red, which is very saturated. The background, however, really doesn't do much interaction with the rest of the piece, and there's a lot of negative space, making the empty grey look much larger without the interruption of a darker shade.

So uh, there's some colour theory for you...
