Mythcarver, the sword, was a famous blade wielded by a bard during the calamity whose name was lost to time. She passed the blade on to other bards through time. The last one to possess it was a famous bard, The White Duke (who Matt based off David Bowie), who was friends with the sphinx Kamaljiori. Only a bard can properly wield the sword to its fullest potential.

Maaaaaaaaan this was epic. If Sam Riegel(Scanlan)ever decided to seriously pursue a career in music(other than his stint on Broadway), it would be epic. Y'alls faces when Grog stabbed Pike were priceless. In the Campaign, the battle with the sphinx was all about them having to figure out his name by four pieces scattered around the battlefield. They kept guessing wrong and the Sphinx kept using an ability on them that permanently aged them making them have to use a high level cleric spell to restore them. The way they handled it here played out muuuuuuuch better on screen as the original way really only works in a dnd game. Them getting separated is new, but I'm thinking that's a way for them to tell two different parts of the story at the same time which is an excellent use of resources because this arc is DEEEEEEEENSELEY packed. I mean, you see just how much is happening in every single episode. They did the same thing in episode 2, telling The Slayers Take section and the Earthbreaker Groon section at the same time.

All of the Vestiges are from the Calamity. To clarify a misunderstanding the Calamity was a specific part of history in this world, a war between the gods that ended in the gods being blocked from entering the mortal world any more. The Vestiges were weapons created by gods for their mortal champions to wield, which is why they're all hidden away now; they are basically WMDs, so they don't want mortals using them against other mortals.
