It seems like you two need to be updated on specific things. One thing is that they have shown the important characters in the past in spirit form after they have died. They did that since episode 1 with the white hair boy and after that it was march and the bear and then gugu and then tonari. They have been openly shown to be in spirit form and instead of going on to "paradise" they were shown to be following fushi on his journey. Not everyone who has passed away that fushi can transform into has been shown to be following fushi. Its basically just the very important people closest to fushi with the exception of the old lady who died at the end of season 1 because instead of going to paradise or following fushi she had the "godlike" character who made fushi turn her into something that is supposed to be "useful" for fushi. We still don't know about what she was supposed to become yet.

Also I am going to go ahead and say I am assuming director is talking about gugu and his girl. This is in no way a spoiler and I feel like its best to tell you guys straight up so you won't be super confused continuing forward but that girl who bon walked up to has nothing to do with gugu's girl. Its been years upon years since fushi ever even interacted with gugu and his girl. You had the multiple years he was alone on an island and you had the multiple multiple years he was being chill and the descendants of hayase kept trying to get into a sexual relationship with him. There were at least like 5 different descendants one after the other. Even if you were thinking it might be the spirit of gugu's girl she looks nothing alike with the one making the handkerchief in this episode. I will however say that the episode made it pretty obvious but if you go back and rewatch the episode you see someone VERY similar to the looks of the girl bon saw and the hints were even more obvious when you saw that person washing the handkerchief and asking about it as if it was something important. The connection you two were supposed to make was sort of obvious in the episode and somehow neither of you put it together. The fact that they made this obvious is why I wanted to tell you the connection you were supposed to make in this episode but nothing else has been revealed yet. I will make it easy and just say go look at the scene with the character washing the handkerchief and go look at the scene where he sees the girl when he was young.
