Lee watch Roshi's latest Kakegurui viedo from 3:00 . Lupa literally @ you on a certain scene, it's when the intro's playing so don't worry about spoilers, thought it was pretty funny

I was with my boys thinking that Elf with the glasses was a villain right up until the end there too. Also I think the creature in the pit is a Hydra, think like Rororo from Overlord, rather than a spider. Haven't read the light novel or manga or whatever so don't know for sure, just an assumption.

I know Arc is going to smash once he gets that curse taken care of an epic arms crossed dropping off the cliff no knees bent nothing and whatever is in that pit homeboy has 5 rings to control it which means that thing is a problem

Oliver

It's ep 1 of Kakegurui on their youtube channel

First off i need to say this comment isnt for schooling or correcting anyone, i just thought someone would appreciate an explanation from japanese culture and how it is used in animes. I will refer to Naruto and shows on this channel a lot, since you guys and lee can easier refer to it. There are a lot of animes that use references from folklore Japanese culture is very different to ours. We have the Shinto religion, that believes any and everything can be a god or has a representative god(even a way of life could be deified). The folklore of japan is heavily integrated into society, meaning that pretty much everyone knows it and so it is an easy reference material for animes/mangas to adapt from(like the grim fairy tales here in the west). Japanese people can easily relate to it, so it is often used and heavily fantasized. Shintoism plays a huge part in the folklore. Since shintoism believes that any object or creature can be deified. Animals are a popular choice in this, like the mythical foxes that get often refered to(Kuruma in Naruto is one such being). Japanese folklore is massive and many animes take a lot of inspiration from it. For example we have youkais which are apparitions, not ghosts, but more godly/demon like. A popular translation to english for youkai is "something that is otherworldly and strange yet captivating and appealing". Tanuki are one such youkais, they are pretty much tricksters. They love to play pranks on travelers and disguise themselves as humans or other animals. That is why Raphtalia, who resembles a tanuki, can use illusion magic. She is basically a trickster which is easily relateable for Japanese people. Another popular one is the Kitsune or mythical foxes i refered to earlier. It is believed that kitsune grow a tail every 100 years. To relate that to Naruto, Kuruma has to be 900-1000 years old(not really, but you get what i mean) and is therefore the mighties of the tailed beasts (since he is the oldest). Kitsune, as many other youkais, can be classified as good and evil. The good ones are often protectors of villiages(like in Naruto, the might of an inheritor of a tailed beast[Jinchuuriki] is seen as a protection from these beings) and messengers from gods. Evil Kitsune are similar to tanukis, as they are seen as tricksters. But they can also reward people for their misdeeds. Another youkai are the kappas, they live in rivers and lakes. These are humanoid reptilian/amphibians. They vary depending on region and story, but one common trait is that they have a shell on their head that contains a liquid. This liquid is a representation of their life force. If this liquid is spilled, then kappas die. Because kappas love cucumbers, it is thought that sushi rolls with cucumber are an homage to them. So it is believed those were created to offer to kappas. The next popular one is a Tengu, they are refered as red faced youkais. They are seen as bringer of wars, but were later known as protective deities of mountains and forests. Daitengo are an evolved form of the Tengo. They are seen as monks, they wear long robes and have a red face with long noses. Urukodaki from Demon Slayer (Tanjiros water-style teacher) wears such a mask and lives in forest on a mountain. Again an easy reference that japanese people understand from the beginning, but westerners might see as odd. Since they know nothing about it. The last one i will mention are Shikigamis. Shikigamis are servants that are summoned through a ritual and serve to fulfil their masters wishes. They were often used to spying, stealing or even murdering someone. Shield hero recently introduced them and they are pretty much what i just described. Shikigami are also sometimes human shapes cut out from paper. And practitioners in certain animes use them to attack or create magic like effects. Other beings are onis(like benimaru and shion in slime), a phoenix (who is wildly different to a western phoenix. They are a hybrid animal, with a snake's neck, a goose bust, a turtle's back, and its body is covered with scales. Their long living trait is similar to western culture), a Jorogumo(which is a spider like humanoid creature. If you remember the spider lady from Dororo that falls in love with a human, thats it pretty much it), a Korobokkuro (these are tiny people, that traded with the japanese in the north. In one piece the tontata tribe is referenced from them), a Tsukumogami(are old items that existed for generations and therefore got magical/mystical powers. I cant think of a reference right now, but these items are used often in anime) and a Onryo (which are essentially vengeful ghosts who couldnt move on to the next life/cycle. The Lady from the movie Ring is a good example for it). The ones i mentioned are pretty much the popular ones, which get refered to often. But there are a lot of folklores and beings mentioned in them, so it is hard to describe them all. Another part of the folklore that mixes with history are the shinobis. Shinobis technically existed and they were spies, but over time their stories got a lot more fanciful and exaggerated. Like a village that trains shinobis and is hidden deep in the woods is one such exaggeration(Naruto or in skeleton knight the beastpeoples village) Arc mentions a few popular shinobi names that the beastpeople use. Like Chiyome, Sasuke and Goemon. These were really well known shinobis back when they were alive, so their names are an easy reference for stories. The reason why people get upset, when you say it is from Naruto is because they feel like people misrepresent those stories. Since they know their actual origin. However for us westerns it is new and if you are not invested in japanese culture you wouldnt know about them. I personally like folklores and i read a lot about them, but i wouldnt expect anyone to know this. Even if you watch a lot of animes, that doesnt mean you would understand these references. I hope this helps someone understand animes/mangas a bit better. After i learned about it and looked for these references a lot of animes are much more interesting to me personally, since i can see the link to the real world.

yea probably not, but that isn't why i wrote this comment. I like folklore and i like talking about it. Japanese folklore is just amazing in my eyes, so i like to spread its glory haha

I totally agree with Arian Glenis Maple, humanity is a disease for this planet. Not all people are terrible, but most of them only know how to destroy, pollute and commit a lot of atrocities. All the negative things that happen on Earth are because of humans. There are good people too, but humanity has caused so much trouble for this planet that I can't contradict Arian Glenis Maple.

Same, I love folklore, and Japan has a lot of them, most of which are being used in media and stories today. A big reason I love the Nioh Games are the history and folklore stuff, while not 100% accurate perhaps, it gives you a decent idea.

Toomz

was that villian Zoro's voice actor from OP?

GorillaTaxtiX

Damn, started watching episode 11 and realized... I had no Idea what you guys were talking about in the recap. Lmfao. Had to pump the brakes on that shit and come back to this episode. I swear I watched this one, but I'm either wrong now... or was drunk then. But I'm here now.

Overlord_Ashalon
