Sheera was kind of right about the meaning of Flanders Blue. It's slang for PTSD that soldiers experienced from the war. This was before people knew what PTSD was but they noticed that horrors experienced during the war would cause bouts of depression and anxiety among soldiers. The word Flanders comes from the Belgium region of the same name where 5 of the bloodiest battles of WW1 took place. The word Blue comes from the phrase 'feeling blue'.

Not so fun fact: Being a tunnel digger in WWI was one of the WORST jobs to have, the life expectancy was incredibly low for so many reasons from chemical weapons, running into enemy tunnel diggers, constant cave-ins, chronic claustrophobia that broke many minds; I would honestly rather crawl through barb wire through no man's land and get shot than go through that shit.

Same with shellshock, but back then they thought these mental problems were caused by very specific events, shellshock was artillery and general bombing flash backs/ memories, while the blues was simply melancholy from whatever they went though. Now ptsd is the general umbrella term used for all of that terribleness.

Also they weren't in a factory they were sappers during WW1. Look it up. Also yes they used melee weapons during WW1 making too much noise was a death sentence as the MGs would open up on you so lot of the time the small skirmishes in the trenches were fought with melee weapons so since all these guys in the peaky blinders were former military men its no surprise they all have random melee weapons they are good with from the war.

So one phrase they keep bringing up is 'go over the top'. This refers to the mass charges that soldiers would do in WW1 to capture enemy trenches. Go over the top as in go over your trenches and then get shot by machine gun fire because you are literally walking into the enemy line of fire with no cover. This rarely led to any captured terrority and even if some was captured it was promptly won back by enemy reinforcements.

To clarify ; "Flanders blues" was the a term used in real life back after WW1 that describes a bunch of post war mental health problems, the closest modern day term we have would be shellshock or PTSD. A few of the more common side effects were feeling loss of self agency, survivors guilt, sudden bouts of severe depression, and severe disassociation leading to suicidal thoughts/tendencies. A quote I like "War is hell, and those who pass its gates, are bound to it eternally".

Idk if y'all remember, but Tommy isn't trying to work with Kimber. He's trying to get in good and eventually take him on when he has enough power. Arthur mentioned taking him on at the end of ep2 when Kimber left the Pub. Also, Tommy isn't an addict or anything, he takes that Opium to help him sleep and deal with his PTSD. Back then the common "fixes" were prostitutes, cheap drugs, and liquor to take a man's mind off the shit he suffered in the war. All that stuff just numbed the pain and delayed the inevitable nightmare or flashback, if anything booze and drugs made PTSD for guys like Danny flare up even worse.
