Yup the caltrops were called 'makibishi' or 'igadama', and they usually came in one of two flavors. Iron caltrops were called 'tetsubishi', while the others were used from the dried seed pods of water chestnuts (like what Asirpa picked up), and they were called 'tennenbishi'. They were pretty commonly used because footwear in Japan at the time were really thin and didn't offer any real protection against spikes.
