Just a FYI, they weren't planning a job on the art guy until after Edamame sold the painting. They didn't realize who Edamame was scamming until then. Its also why Cynthia was surprised and stopped talking to him in the gallery so she wouldn't be recognized/and anger.

Idk if you're including Laurent in that statement but I would say Laurent had it all planned out from the beginning. It's implied he knew the painting was an original and he always researches his victims beforehand so he knew that Coleman would be in Paris which is why he sent Edamame there. It was a way for him to give Cynthia closure and also make some money.
