Mao's story is honestly underrated for how C.C. basically manipulated and groomed a 6 year old child for her own unkown devices. It's also a story she obviously regrets with how many times she hesitates to kill him even in the end she does blame herself for how he turned out.

Mao was a pretty tragic character. At that young of an age, he wasnt given a power he couldnt fully control or understand. The only person who he couldnt hear was C.C. and thats why she was the only "human" ironically that he knew of. I wouldn't completely fault C.C. as she had her own goals and didnt have any control over what geass she gave Mao. Besides, I don't think she just picked up Mao randomly and gave him a geass. They probably met b4 she placed the geass on him.

cc is def at fault but i dont think she purposely manipulated him considering how much it seems to show that she cares for him. Its just the geass went berserk and made him totally crazy.

So in the dub version I never read the relationship between C.C and mao as her grooming him because the translation changed it to "IN HIS MIND I became his only friend and lover" and she expressed that she raised him but he got that idea because she was the only one he could stand to be around. There's definitely some neglect on her part but the introduction of mao was more so to counter lelouch's hesitation of using his geass on someone he cares about due to their conversation on the train. In the dub it went "If you have someone you care about you should keep them at a distance" - C.C "is that from experience" Lelocuh "No it's a way of life" C.C . They're relying on each other more by realizing that if they continue to go down this past they can't have both a peaceful life and people they care about and have them be safe. These translation choices for the sub is tricky because a lot of these scenes i'm reading different now

C.C. never had sex with Mao. She was using him, like she said, in order to fulfill the contract. It was all in Mao's head. He believed that she was the only one who understood him, but he couldn't understand her due to his Geass being ineffective on her. She is at fault for making Mao this way and never doing anything about it, which is why she could never find it in herself to kill him just like she asked Lelouch if he would eliminate Shirley. Could Lelouch do what she couldn't and hesitated to do even when facing Mao again?
