He's hallucinating his less-insecure side, which takes the form of Nigorikawa-kun, the love interest from the shoujo manga Yamada was making him read who is just a taller and more confident version of him so you're not far off i guess after all he's only 13 at the moment so who knows

Yeah I figured he was from the manga from when we briefly saw the actual pages in szn1. I just thought it’d be cool if the mangaka has the hallucination there to also foreshadow right in our face how he’d look in the future because I assume Yamada finds the manga guy cute too
