So today I got an email from a festival publicist, telling me that a filmmaker had complained to them that my review of their film used "unauthorized" screenshots, instead of their official promotional images. This confused me, because I understood this Patreon to be a private, subscribers-only affair.

Ah, not so! It seems there are data scrapers like this one that pull writing off Patreons and post it publicly. And that's how the filmmaker found my write-up. (And may I say, that while they were framing the problem as one about images and copyright, I suspect they may have also been put off my my lukewarm, slightly flippant review.)

I write here on the assumption that it's private. But apparently that is a faulty assumption. This troubles me greatly, and I am going to take a short break while I figure out what to do next.

All together now: this is why we can't have nice things.

Well, the whole point of this enterprise was that I could write semi-formal reviews for a small coterie. If that's not possible, I'm not sure what to do. Life is full of compromises, but this was never meant to be one of them. Where my writing is concerned, I take the Loverboy stance: I gotta do it my way, or no way at all.

This may be too optimistic, but is there an option to write to this site and demand they stop scraping your text from behind a paywall?

I got a boilerplate response from Patreon, and zero response from the offending site. Since I am not Disney and don't pay a retinue of lawyers to protect my intellectual property rights, it's pretty hopeless.
