Soo good. Only complaint is that it had to end. Bumped my sub to the next level because of how well this was done.

Great start. Talked to a professor of history, and he thought it was doing well.

Very interesting beginning. I have long felt my understanding of World War 1 was fundamentally lacking so hopefully this will help!

I want that sandwich, that changed history! Must have been a pretty good sandwich.

This is amazing. You guys are doing history right!

I love it! I'm also a big fan of CrashCourse, but I think your guys series is better because of the animation, I love your animation! your punic wars series was great for my western civilizations class, and this one will be great for my European history class as well, please keep it up.

Oh yeah, this is the good stuff. If you want another fantastic telling of the War to end all wars, look up "The Great War and the making of the 20th Century" on Youtube. It's a British documentary that is one of my all time favorites.

Delightful. Now, just let me read up on everything again.

Nice 1st episode. Thanks for the hard work. Just as a point you mention that there has been no war involving major powers in Europe for 100 years you might want to check out the Crimena War and Franco-Prussian War. The later has a significant impact on the tactics employed in the opening months of the war as the young officers in that war are now the senior officers in the Great War.

This is already an instant classic! You guys will be amazing for one reason, the connections you draw to the present age. I live for this kind of history. THANK YOU!

Love the way you are doing these! Understanding the WHY of history or gaming is necessary for moving forward.

Question -- what did you mean by saying WWI "shattered the past, and forced us to give up our last ties to our medieval understandings"?

Anonymous

I am from Germany and graduated high school (better the equivalent we have here) with focus on German history. Your video is very well researched and does a perfect job to describe the complex geo-political situation prior to WW1. The only thing that stings me is the flag you use for Germany. The black, red and gold flag for Germany was adopted after WW2.

Yeah, we realized that error after the video had already been released, and wish we could go back in time to change it. Our writer was preparing for a convention during the last week of production for this episode, so he didn't get a chance to give this the final fact-check. Hopefully future episodes will see these sorts of errors ironed out!

It's largely a question of scale. Those wars definitely had significance (heck, maybe we'll get to cover them someday) but compared to the Napoleonic Wars or WWI, they didn't affect all of Europe to the same degree.

ExtraCredits

While it's complicated (and I would encourage you to read about the after effects of WWI to learn more about it), the basic idea is that it put the nail in the coffin of Europe's crumbling nobility/caste systems and changed our concept of war from something glorious and heroic to the more grim and ugly modern view.

I love the sandwich story as much as the next guy, but if I'm not mistaken, it actually traces back to a Portuguese fiction novel from 2001... http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/gavrilo-princips-sandwich-79480741/

I find it quite funny watching this as while living in Israel. Quite literally living with the consequences of the war (like I can literally see the separation wall ((amusingly originally a British idea)) from the Palestinian authority as I'm writing this). Definitely the single most pointless war ever fought by human kind.
