Illness plagued Simón Bolívar. Evil rumors dogged him. Yet he held fast to his dream of a united South American federation.

We're taking a year-end break after this episode, but we'll be back with Lies in January!

Simón Bolívar - VI: All Good Things - Extra History

Simón Bolívar hoped to bring the nations of South America together in one great federation, but he feared that people would think he meant to make himself a king. He tried to step back, but revolution threatened from within his ranks and his body had grown weak with illness. Bright Ops

I kind of want to know what happened after Simon's death.

It's sad knowing everything you worked so hard to achieve would just wisp away in the wind by the time you die.

And so does the life of Símon Bolivar end, his legacy of Liberty for South America intermingled with chaos.

I wouldn't say everything. He did liberate multiple countries in South America, and while his legacy is complicated, he undoubtedly changed the course of history by doing so. It's more like he didn't achieve everything that he set out to achieve (continental federation, lasting government institutions, etc)... but I don't suppose any of us get to achieve 100% of our goals in life.

An interesting start to our coverage of South America on Extra History, I hope! Wonder what the next one will be.

Revolutions never turn out the way you want.

Such a sad story for somebody who tried so hard

How Unfortunate, he gave everything to chase his dream, and he ultimately failed , BUT that is far more than most people can claim with their lives, and his influence has and will live on throughout history.. Can We put him in the EH Hall of Fame with Walpole?

Film Vagabond

He accomplished the goal of liberating so many people, it's too bad fighting for people is a lot easier than getting them to work together. I've just listened to Hamilton & Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote a really great concept album. As a testament to his command of the written word he essentially created the world's most popular history lesson. I learned so much about Alexander Hamilton from little things like how he went to King's College, his involvement in the revolutionary war, writting the ferderlist papers almost single handedly & big revelations like his scandalous affair. You really got the sense of someone who wanted a free nation and he could have actually become president if he hadn't crossed the line (Side note I don't know if it's just me but Thomas Jefferson sounds like a complete jerk & no amount of research will sway me - don't get me started in Aaron Burr) Hamilton is like Extra History in that it uses a very creative medium to make the characters stick in our heads & I'd like to see more artistic endeavours which further education in some way
