Simón Bolívar - IV: Defeat is Not Surrender - Extra History

Failure had taught Simón Bolívar one important lesson: no single state in Spanish South America could win independence alone. Film Vagabond

Such a great narrative. Truth is truly stranger than fiction

Jim McGeehin

Funny story about Gregor MacGregor, he was one of the greatest con men of his age, and certainly one of the most audacious. His scheme was the Poiyas scheme. He made up a completely fictional country with full documents, a phony Parliament, even uniforms for its phony military. He would sell investors on positions and interests in this fictitious country, and when the marks would be taken to the location in Central America, he abandoned them to their fate. Gives you a sense for just how different the world was at that time.

"Why let your current job as head of a democratic state get in the way of a good dictatorship?" These words amuse me for multiple reasons.

I do enjoy how often history comes up with ideas that would be totally shot down if you wrote them in a novel. "He loses how many times and still keeps trying? Come on!"
