One story I once read about Vlad Tepes, was that he held a banquet for a number of the boyars and then asked them all how many Princes they had served. Translated; How many Princes have they put up and put away before him? The youngest among them counted no less than five. In response, Vlad walked out, locked the doors, and set the place on fire. Another story is that of a merchant who got robbed and complained to Vlad. Vlad tracked down the thief and returned the merchant's goods and money. But the merchant found an extra gold coin and gave it to Vlad since he would only take what was stolen. As the thief was impaled, Vlad admitted he had hidden the coin and would have impaled the merchant if he hadn't returned the coin. Goes to show what kind of man he was: Someone who punished disloyalty and one who rewarded honesty. Although rewarding honesty by NOT impaling them is a bit of a stretch...

I mean... "I killed the one who stole from you. If you then steal from me, how are you any different?" :P

I don't suppose any of the stories concerning Vlad begin with the words "once upon a time" do they? If they do they'd be a lot less spooky.
