What Genre are Wrestling Games? - Pinning Down Fighting vs Sports Games - Extra Credits

Sign up to Morning Brew for free today https://bit.ly/mbextracredits Genres can be a loose collection of ideas and mechanics so it isn't super surprising when particular games bust the mold. But usually those games are either unique or end up spinning off their own genre (Soulslike anyone?) What about wrestling games? Are they sports games? Fighting games? Or their own unique genre blended from the two? It sounds like it's been around long enough and has enough unique quirks to be its own genre.

There are tons of games that fall under 2 or more genres, I don't see why this would be any different than say... Borderlands being both an RPG and an FPS

I wonder if there is any games/media on actual sport wresteling? as in Olympic/Greaco-Roman and so on.

I gotta agree with Kevin. Allowing a game to be more than one genre allows itself more aspects to work with. Game Dev Tycoon acknowledges this as a mechanic of the growing complexity of games as the industry progressed. A favorite example among one of my friend groups is that NASCAR Thunder 2004 had RPG elements. That is a hilarious sentence but somehow the game was better for it. Also, shout out to Starman in the title card. He was my favorite in Pro Wrestling for the NES.
