Third Century Crisis - Enter Aurelian - Extra History - #2

Thanks to our Patrons for selecting this topic! Want to choose what subject we cover next? Join us on Patreon and vote on topics for EH! http://bit.ly/EHPatreon Aurelian came from... well, we don't really know where exactly. But boy did he leave his mark on Roman history. While Rome was being gripped by the Third Century Crisis and most emperors could rarely last for a year, Aurelian became emperor and managed to claim several titles, including Restitutor Orbis, restorer of the world. Quite a hefty title, that. We cover his battles with the German tribes, the Goths, and Zenobia. Got the Episode a bit later but it gave me Time to finish new Alternate History segments. Are you going to make the song in Episode 1 a sperate video?

The Deaf Mans Lands

There's a delicious irony to the thought of Romans feigning a retreat using lighter cavalry to tire out a heavier counterpart.

The Deaf Mans Lands

That's how Triumphs worked. They were to be paraded along until the parade reached the temple of Jupiter, at which point the enemy leaders in question were ritually strangled alongside the rest of their people that were paraded with them.

Do you suppose they copied that tactic off the Parthians after Parthia defeated Roman armies at Carrhae and stole several Legionary Eagles? The Romans had a knack for learning from their enemies ~ weapons, tactics, anything that they thought worked.

Maybe I should request this for "Lies", but so far (2 eps in) the series focuses on the battles and revolving door of emperors. Are we going to see the effects of the crisis on the rest of the Empire? Are there enough soldiers to safeguard trade routes and colonies, or are the provinces fending for themselves? Who handles other, non-military crises in the Empire when the head of state is leading armies in the field most of the time?

Bill Lemmond

I really do pay attention, but my favorite part is still seeing Zoe bounding across the top of the titles, in the end sequence. I gave a Zoe plush to a friend, who'd lost her much loved, long-suffering actual cat. She does draw comfort from her Zoe clone. =^.^=
