We've seen a lot of people returning to our 1918 Flu Pandemic series and drawing comparisons between that outbreak and the recent Coronavirus scare. Lead writer of Extra History Robert Rath  (who lives in Hong Kong) provides a short video retrospective on the series in light of recent events, describes the quirks of life under voluntary self-quarantine, and shows us his castle of toilet paper and hand soap. The 1918 Flu Pandemic: Coronavirus Update

With coronavirus in the news, we've seen a resurgence of interest in our 1918 Flu Pandemic series. Given that, Head Writer Robert Rath (who lives in Hong Kong) provides a short video retrospective on the series in light of recent events, describes the quirks of life under voluntary self-quarantine, and shows us his castle of toilet paper and hand soap. Please note that this video was filmed on February 18th, and conditions may have changed since then.

Hey Robert! Do us a favour and don't die. Though I guess that would also be good for you. Still, don't die!

No worries, I'm fine. Really! Hong Kong has only 89 confirmed cases out of 7.2 million people. And because of the city's experience with SARS, people know what to do and are very careful about hand washing, wearing masks, using sanitizer etc. Speaking of sanitizer, two days after filming this video I actually found some! I probably should've stated in the video that many of the shortages are a result of panic buying, not a supply problem (i.e. every day new stuff was delivered, but people bought it before it went on shelves). Some things like sanitizer were sold out regionally but are now coming in from Europe or India. We're a little bored and stir-crazy, but otherwise fine!
