After Angkor fell into decline it was "discovered" by European travelers who declared it a lost and ancient city (it was neither of those things) and came up with, shall we say, inventive explanations for who built the city. But even after the ravages of colonialism, Angkor still stands, a testament to the Khmer Empire and a symbol of Cambodian pride.

Building Angkor - The "Lost" City - Extra History - #5

Join us on Patreon! http://bit.ly/EHPatreon After its decline, Angkor had become the Ancient, Lost City so prominent in our pop culture. Just one problem: Angkor was neither ancient (having declined around the same time as Hundred Years War) nor lost (people still lived there!). That didn't stop the European visitors from trying to invent all kinds of stories for how this city could possibly exist, and stealing parts of the temple to bring back home. But despite all the hardships Angkor faced, it managed to become a national symbol for Cambodia and still remains to this day. Extra Credits without James will feel very strange for those of us who've been following Extra History since the First World War series when it first started. P.S: Our new Piglets also send you their regards. Boy do they stink.
