The Treaty of Versailles, which was Signed, rather Ironically, in the very Room where the German Empire had First been Proclaimed in 1870 [the Hall of Mirrors] that Formally Ended the First World War, is Remembered for Two Reasons. Firstly it is an Example of "Victor's Justice," but mostly it is because it Failed to Ensure a Lasting Peace in Europe. The Goals of the Triumphant Allies were Contradictory: France, after Four Years and 1.3 Million Deaths, Finally had the Revenge they had Craved since the End of the Franco-Prussian War, but Defeating Germany was not Enough ~ they wanted to Humiliate their most Hated Foes. France Demanded War Reparations, to Weaken Germany Economically and Militarily and to Annex the Saar Region. Britain wanted a Balance of Power to Thwart the French Attempt to Assert themselves as Europe's Premier Power as well as Neutralise the German Navy to make sure the Royal Navy was still the Greatest Naval Power on Earth, while the United States wanted the Rebuilding of the European Economy, Self ~ Determination for European Ethnic Minorities, and the Establishment of a League of Nations to Ensure Peace. [President Wilson was so Disgusted by the Final Terms that he Marched out of the Conference] In the Final Treaty, Germany was Forced to Pay War Reparations to Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom, to Renounce the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk [which also had the Effect of Releasing the newly Formed Soviet Union from Paying Yearly War Reparations to Germany] and Reduce the Size of its Military Forces with no Air Force, no Tanks and no General Staff Structure. In the East, a Strip of Land around the Port City of Danzig was Awarded to the newly Founded Republic of Poland, and the Rhineland was to be Occupied by the Allies for 15 Years. Germany's Colonial Empire was Divided up among the Allies, with Britain Claiming the Lion's Share. Many Thousands of Germans couldn't Understand why they were Surrendering when, all along the Front, German Forces still stood on Foreign Ground and a Belief took hold that Germany had been Betrayed by Liberals, Communists and Jews, which Nationalist Organisations would use in Order to Attract new Members. Most Historians are Agreed that, had the Treaty been less Harsh, then the Rise of Hitler and the beginning of the Second World War in 1939 may not have Occurred.

flags forever the disease of extra history

Dramatic potential is not something that should be considered in a history video

Rob was *the* writer for this series, and James has not had time to do Lies, so this was Rob's first solo Lies!

Considering that our goal is to educate people who know very little about history, it definitely is. Our videos are both entertaining and educational. The hardcore history nerds who want to dig deep will find plenty of sources that give out all the dry details and names and dates. Extra History has always been a "pop history" show intended to get people interested in learning more when they haven't before.

Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos, and thank you for being so forthright, and taking the time to explain what you had actually said about Welch, and for making sure We weren't confused. :)
