Castro out lived them all what a shame.

There are Two Alternate History Scenarios wherein the Cold War went Hot as far as I Know. One is 1983: Doomsday on the Alternate History Wiki, http://althistory.wikia.com/wiki/1983%3A_Doomsday and the other is a Video Game Mentioned Earlier on Called, Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath [no Points Awarded for Guessing what that's about.] Let's Hope this Cold War Party continues for a very, VERY long Time.

Great video. I'm a huge fan of these 20th century series'. Not that the others are bad, mind you!

Paul Lenoue

So who gave the order to shoot down that U2?

Anonymous

There's no definite proof, but the leading consensus is that a trigger happy AA crew fired without permission.

Hugely emotional episode which throws into relief the absolute loss to the world of the young Kennedys. One question: did Castro really trash his office or was that EH dramatic licence?

Good question Huw. I've always known how close we all came to annihilation that weekend of October 1963, but I didn't know from how many angles that destruction could've come. Sheesh. Those bomb shelters all those well-to-do Americans were buying / installing in their backyards would've had all the effectiveness of a gnat's butt against all the nuke heads detailed here on EH to have been in striking distance at the time.

Bill Lemmond

Excellent series, bringing us so many more details not included in past presentations, including one TV movie I recall from decades ago. But that nuclear clock has little credibility with me. We've had 73 years with no world war, no use of nuclear weapons, and they still say we're only a couple minutes from midnight? That kind of message is only pushing for getting rid of the weapons that have obviously prevented wider wars.

Fortunately, we haven’t gotten blown up by nukes yet. Yet...

It looks like the Doomsday clock factors in quite a bit more than just the probability of nuclear warfare. From the website of the organization that puts together the Doomsday clock: "Our Science and Security Board tracks numbers and statistics—looking, for example, at the number and kinds of nuclear weapons in the world, the parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the degree of acidity in our oceans, and the rate of sea level rise. The board also takes account of leaders’ and citizens’ efforts to reduce dangers, and efforts by institutions—whether of governments, markets, or civil society organizations—to follow through on negotiated agreements."

Bill Lemmond

All are important, but when have they ever acknowledged any progress away from midnight? Are they not familiar with the story of the boy who cried "Wolf!" too many times? I'm concerned about all the same things, have been even as a little kid. But I don't take them and their doomsday clock seriously.
