Khosrau Anushirawan: Trolling Justinian - Extra History - #4

Iran and Rome had agreed to an Eternal Peace, but tensions between them proved too great and Khosrau decided to invade while Justinian's guard was down. His army swept into Rome practically unopposed, and he made a mockery of Justinian at every opportunity while treating himself to a grand old time pillaging and parading across the Roman border. As a Early Access Patreon Fridays felt a little odd for me with no Extra History to look Forward to. Guys, Willkommen zurück und ein gutes neues Jahr! [Translation: Welcome Back and Happy New Year!} P.S: Oh and you can be sure I am Rooting for the Byzantines in this Series. I am ALWAYS Rooting for the Byzantines whenever they come up. ;-)

Jason Youngberg

Makes me want to go back and rewatch the series on Justinian to get the other side. It's great you're doing both sides of this war. Someone one said, "History is filled with great minds meeting .... head on."

I live for Walpole, it's a game to spot him now.

Hopefully we'll get to do more crossovers like this in the future the more topics we cover!

Your soldiers choose me, your cities choose me, your people choose me.

Will Weaver

And now we know the real reason Belisarius was tied up in Italy...damn you, Walpole!

An entire military campaign just to humiliate your rival.... Priceless

Justinian's Envoy: What did we do? Khosrau: What DIDN'T you do?

Anonymous

That's amazing. The more I hear about Khosrau, the more I fall in love with him! This episode got me curious though. Is Weh Antiok Khusrau still around? Is it still populated with Roman descendants?

Anonymous

Khosrau really should have mentioned to Justinian's envoy about the whole adoption scheme...

Checking wikipedia reveals that it was essentially a suburb of Ctesiphon and it appears to have declined alongside the main city following the rise of Baghdad as the dominant city in the area. However, Roman descendants are very much a thing in Iraq, which is actually quite a melting pot of ancient and medieval ethnic groups in the region. There are a couple hundred thousand native Iraqis with red hair and freckles, for example. Until the 2003 US invasion, it was also the refuge for all sorts of small religions and denominations that have died out in the rest of Eurasia. Rising sectarianism and tribalism following the invasion means that increasingly these groups have been persecuted and live as refugees in various parts of Europe. The most prominent example is probably how Södertälje just south of Stockholm is the center of global Aramean culture.

Great work!

Honestly, I have to admit. Seeing both sides of the story, seeing these two men of great intelligence, passion and nobility clashing against one another makes me sad... Alone, they did so much... just imagine what they might have been able to do, if they had instead worked together. If they were able to put aside their grudges and history, and work together to make both of their empires truely *great*

I am back! I missed you guys. For a while I wasn't even sure the Justinian in this series was the same one we knew and loved. It turned out it was, and that story was turned on its head by the fact that our protagonist happens to be Khosrau!

Parlay! Parley! Actually, it's merely a guideline, you might say.

Wasn't it the Ostrogoths who were fighting in Italy and the Visigoths in Spain?

Lamont Stewart

So this episode was like a cross over with one of the Justinian epsidoes
