The Christmas Truce is one of the most poignant events of the First World War: a time when men rose above the madness of the conflict and (for just a moment) saw each other as fellow humans. How did it happen?

This BONUS episode of Extra History is brought to you by World of Tanks! We will conclude this holiday special with another episode next week, December 24.

WW1 Christmas Truce: Silent Night - Extra History - #1

In the spirit of the Christmas Truce, World of Tanks has prepared a gift box for EVERY PLAYER. Redeem the bonus code: HULSE14 On Christmas Eve in 1914, soldiers in the trenches sang together across the wastes of No Man's Land. Some were brave enough to step out of their trenches and meet face-to-face, forming an unofficial truce that lasted (with a few blemishes) until the end of Christmas Day. This story really does show both the human capacity for empathy and bonding and the intrinsic brutality of states at war. I do appreciate that the First World War seems to be less forgotten than it was just a decade or so ago. It was so important and, yet, for most of my life, most of what people had to say about it was that it must have existed since there was a second one.

Cifer

I recently read that the truce was essentially the product of trench warfare - unmoving and for long times facing the same enemy, it's essentially a repeated prisoner's dilemma that allowed for the building of trust, which would be far harder in mobile wars where one would rapidly switch enemies.

Jason Youngberg

Knowing that people used this to spy and prepare for war doesn't change how I feel. It's a miracle made by people. People who rose above the hate of war, if only for a little while. I hope one day we can do that again.

Ryan Wojciechowski

I always get teary eyed when people talk about the Christmas truce. It's one of those rare, beautiful moments where, just for a second, everyone was human. No vanity, no anger, just peace in the middle of war.

If you are intrested, there is a French movie about the christmas truce in WW1. It's called "Joyeux Noël". I dont know how the title was translated in english, but a litteral translation would be "Merry Christmas".

Tabitha Hooper

This was one of my favorite bed-time stories that my dad told me growing up. My dad loves history (particularly WWI and WWII); so I got some rather unconventional bed-time stories as a child.

Can we declare every day of the year a holiday and have our soldiers trade cigars and booze every holiday forever?

I've heard so many recommendations for this movie, I think I have to check it out!

ExtraCredits

That is the cutest bed-time story I've ever heard of. :} Props to your dad, and I hope we did justice to this tale you grew up on!

Bill Lemmond

I'm hoping, some day, with my web comic, to show an episode of Dr. Luther's alternate reality viewer, in which the Christmas truce was adopted by the various army leaders, then their governments, and the war ended. To roughly quote Terry Pratchett, "There's no better present than a future."

Bill Lemmond

And I have finally joined World of Tanks. It's downloading and installing, now. I don't know how much I'll play, as generally I avoid PVP. But if I can raise charity funds through live-streaming, I'm willing to get squished, over and over. :)

What makes me love this Ladies and Gentlemen, is that the Monday before it was youtube and I had to prior knowledge of the subject, I wrote a heartfelt piece about the 1914 Truce, and I was grateful to see this pop up the following Sat and learn more about what I feel is one of the greatest showings of Humanity coming through in the most inhumane of times
