The animation in this episode was so amazing in ways that most shows in a season of anime usually brush off like the detail in clothing movement, heavy use of quality background animation and creative methods of expressing movement and weight and even in just short action cuts giving them that extra detai. Also while Rika is a bit of sour note personality wise currently on the cast don't let that distract from how absolutely standout tons of her character animation is, she has easily some of the best character animation of the last 10+ years. Seriously some of her character animation sequences are kizumonogatari levels of impressive.

Is momoe trans, thats the question i have argued with many people on tumblr and reddit about. I personally have came to the conclusion that there isnt any definitive proof either way. You may disagree however, and thats fine. I Like it either way, either way it pog. second, there is an error in this episode that is rather huge on the directors part. A part of context was missed on the girls vs boys suicide scene. "According to director Shin Wakabayashi on Twitter, there is a bit more context to this scene which didn't make it into the episode. Neiru was originally supposed to follow up her "What?!" with the line "When it comes to their brains, boys and girls are also the same." However, this line was cut because Wakabayashi assumed that her feelings were evident from her expression and reaction throughout the scene. "Neiru was having a negative reaction to that conversation," he explained. He stressed that he didn't want to include too many explanations for things happening inside the show, which was why he initially hesitated about sharing this information, but he decided on relaying just that little snippet." https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2021-02-07/wonder-egg-priority-director-shares-cut-context-for-mannequins-sexist-dialogue-scene-in-episode-4/.169258

I just love Neiru in this episode.

Also I think describing Rika’s neck as puppy-like comes from her choker which looks like a dog collar.

Momoe is a trans girl. It should get clearer as the series progresses. A lot of the trans women I've spoken to say that not only does Momoe's experiences line up with that of a trans girl, but that her narrative would not make sense if she were a gender-nonconforming cis girl or a trans guy. the narrative puts a heavy emphasis on momoe being happier as female and presenting more femininely, which if you interpret her as a trans boy or gnc cis girl is YIKES, but it makes complete sense if she were a trans girl. I wouldn't take the Adam's apple comment as any indication of Momoe's assigned gender at birth. There's plenty of women with Adam's apples and plenty of men with without/non-prominent ones. I thought that comment was more the girls recognizing Momoe as a girl and realizing they fucked up calling her a boy, and wanting to alleviate some of her gender dysphoria. also when trans people refer to their "real name" they (usually) mean the name they chose for themselves, not their deadname (which in Momoe's case is likely Momotaro). I think the biggest thing that heavily implies Momoe is a trans girl is the women-only bus scene. It's not exactly impossible for cis gnc girls to be harassed for "intruding women's spaces" but in this day and age it's likely that they'll get harassed because people think they're a trans woman. Its also MUCH more common for trans women to be harassed for "being a man intruding women's spaces" (see: the bathroom ""debate"" nonsense and the surge of reactionary TERF rhetoric in recent years. The "I'll cut it off for you" ("since you want to be a woman so badly") is SCARILY reminiscent of the way TERFS spout violent castration fantasies towards trans women.). This comment is already getting pretty long, but although I wish the writers would have been more explicit with Momoe's transness, there is a trend of LGBT stories relying on subtext, and especially in psychological anime like WEP which relies on subtlety and trusts that the audience will be able to pick up on hints, I think this is not a matter of "clashing headcanons" but rather people failing to understand the trans girl experience. i think it's worth pointing out that shinji nojima also wrote a manga that was more explicit in its portrayal of trans women. it doesn't say a lot about WEP, but it certainly means that at least one writer on the show has experience and is at least somewhat familiar with writing trans women characters (whether or not it's a good representation is another story...)

also re: your comments on gender "not mattering" : i know that this is a common thing cis people will try and say to be polite, but for a lot of trans and nonbinary people (myself included) it really does to us. perhaps minor spoilers but not really, a large part of Momoe's conflict is that girls claim to be attracted to her, but she can't tell if they like her as a girl or if they think of her as a boy but call her a girl to avoid conflict. again, a VERY common and real, justifiable fear amongst trans women, especially trans women lesbians. considering that when the girls claim they like Momoe, they say they like her *despite* the fact she's a girl, implying they don't really see her as a girl.

I agree with all the points you bring up, however in here I believe Tee's comment about it "not mattering" means more like it doesn't matter what her biological sex is as she presents as a girl, she's a girl and he will refer her that way because of it. And I feel like that's the right way to do it, cause it's quite invasive for people to question what genitals you were born with cause that doesn't matter. What matters is your gender identity and when stated people should respect that instead of wondering and asking whether someone is trans, presents more masculine or feminine to how their gender is often seen, or whether they are cis but have features of what are seen as what the opposite sex usually has.

Ira

Yeah definitely there is ways to talk about it, but regarding the episode I think we still don't know enough and speculating is kinda useless. But of course in real life it is an important discussion to have around it and how it affects people, however in an individual level I don't think people should make assumptions or ask people since I believe that is highly inappropriate. Just wanted to explain myself a little more. But I of course understand not wanting to go deeper into the discussion here and I totally agree. I wish you a great day! ^_^

While that would make sense and it would be great, I doubt the creators meant her to be transgender. It's pretty obvious that the writer(s) are using all these delicate issues like suicide, sexual identity, bullying, as mere plot devices and not as themes to be explored in a nuisance manner. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong in the final episode, but I doubt it.

Most likely what happened to Miwa is that she was molested but her dad's boss said he was only patting her on the head or doing some other type of more "socially acceptable" physical contact. That's why her mom told her what she did. That is something that happens quite frequently, specially when the one molesting is someone close to the family. They tend to believe them over their kids because it is easier to accept. Fun fact WEP are my initials. I should have mentioned that it's only a fun fact to me.

I thought Momo said she was a girl, not a trans girl

Ginko no Mushi

"All trans girls are girls" is true. "All girls are trans girls" is not true. Momo said she was a girl. She did not say that she was a trans girl
