i think the studio had some issues during production on this season so it may not be as high quality for animation

Scrunchie

If I remember correctly, most of this season was in production during the pandemic. The studio switched to working from home partway through which caused them a bunch of internal issues, since they had to adapt to new working conditions. I bet it was a huge, stressful mess for them at the time.

Near

The knife thing is interesting indeed. In the novel, he stabs his throat multiple times refusing to accept he can't undo Rem's condition. So like he always gets to her bed like this, sees the knife, stabs, and repeat. That's why they purposefully centered on it so much.

So I'm watching this for the first time so I have 2 theories, this is NOT a spoiler. I'm not on season 2 yet (I just finished season 1) but I wanted confirmation - NOT if the theories are correct, because that's a spoiler, but if my 1st theory is revealed is season 1 and I missed it: So Sloth.... He's basically Subaru, right? He probably is from a different world too and was brought by the witch who gave him his power (when he dies - he reincarnates in another person's body. So it's EXTREMELY similar to Subaru's - eternal life, dying over and over forever, eternal suffering). He fell in love with her at first sight and swore to serve her forever. He was probably a normal dude but as he kept dying over and over and over and didn't get anything from it (the witch didn't love him back, he did NOT get a harem like Subaru did, apparently, to keep him sane XD), and slowly he went insane. The witch was disappointed which is why she brought Subau to her world. Sloth is probably a mirror of what Subaru could become in the future and a heartbreaking two sides of the same coin situation. And since he did say there are 6 "sins", these 2 probs aren't the only ones whom the witch gave power. That orrrrr.... My second, more unhinged theory: *Sloth IS Subaru in the future*. WAY less likely, but that would be so cool. Subaru went through so much trauma from going back in time and dying over and over that he started to go insane. Emilia, trying to save him, did everything she could. Then, slowly, she started turning on the dark side... Eventually becoming *THE WITCH HERSELF*, changing Subaru's power to reincarnate into another body (or his power did that on its own once it reached some kinda limit?) instead of going back in time. His changing bodies so much, and having so many different memories from the past, made him actually *LOSE* his memory slowly of his past life as Subaru, forgetting who Emilia, now the witch, used to be... And now is left to just adore, love, and serve the witch, his beloved. He only remembers that the witch is his love, that's it. Emilia, aka the witch, eventually becomes so powerful that *she GOES BACK IN TIME* to normal world Subaru to give him the power to try to save her and himself - to be able to go back in time until their fate changes. She rejected Sloth in the last episode not because she doesn't care about him, but because he's a lost cause now, and she'll do this ALL OVER AGAIN to save him before he becomes Sloth. Since it's a time loop show it's not TOO far-fetched. Less complicated: Emilia becomes the witch for some reason - possibly after realizing what's going on with Subaru, and/or him slowly going insane. She goes back in time, since she's that powerful now, to reach out to the Subaru who's in our world so she saves both herself and him, she fails because she can't communicate with him - she can only stop him from saying the thing about his power, or it could possibly be stopped and she wouldn't be able to do what she planned to. And he starts losing his mind because of his power in this timeline too, he slowly starts forgetting his past, with only new memories left, and slowly turns into the Sloth we know. Emilia, as the witch, either change his power so it's less mentally tasking, or his power shifts to the one of Sloth. She sees how she failed and tries again, while Sloth is still alive, Subaru-from-episode-one whole thing happens AGAIN, this is that timeline. Subaru kills Sloth, which would be soooo cool if they were the same person), so tragic. Sloth dies still in love with his witch - with Emilia. *HIS LOVE FOR THE WITCH (EMILIA) IS THE ONLY THING LEFT - THE STRONGEST THING ABOUT SUBARU IS HIS LOVE.* It also makes sense why the witch wants to go back to Emilia's body, she wants to go back so she can warn Subaru or just try to save him with her knowledge. I know this is all over the place I half-came up with it as I wrote it but it WOULD make so much sense and it would hurt SOOOO much more to know that it's inevitable for both of them to go insane and evil to save each other. It would make so much sense as to why Sloth is in love with the witch and why he's obsessed with Subaru's love (because it's the same thing), it would make sense why the witch wants Emilia's body, it would make sense why Subaru was summoned here. And the fact that Sloth, in this scenario past Subaru, tortured and killed Rem?! That'd be a literal Greek mythology type of tragedy. Sadly I don't think that's where they will go with this, I think they want a happy ending despite everything so even if it's similar to this, it wouldn't end in tragedy. Still tho, very fun to theorize.

Heh, I never get tired of the "peace peace yay" reference

I wish I could watch season 2 with fresh eyes again. I love these types of theories. All I will say is that season 2 is 10x more information heavy than season 1. Honestly, recommend watching some episodes twice just in case you miss points. To be honest, starting your season 2 watch now is perfect as season 3 was announced for October with a 90 minute first episode.
