I think I've figured out what makes the eyes on these characters look weird/dead the way they look in this set. Their eyes don't aim correctly to focus on a distinct point in space. It looks to me like the artist simply "aims" one eye in the desired direction and then simply copies that setting over to the other eye a lot of the time. This results in a sort of "parallel of eyelines" for the characters, that reads as being a Thousand Yard Stare off into the indeterminate distance, rather than focusing on anything remotely close to them (like the setting around them). If the artist isn't bothering to account for the parallax in the direction of the eyes when posing, so as to have each eye aim towards a specific spatial location, the effect winds up making the characters look bored, uninterested in what's happening around them or simply inattentive, reducing the impact of what is (supposedly) going on. When you have to ask yourself "what is she looking at?" and the answer isn't intuitively obvious, there's a problem. I went ahead and checked all 3 parts for this particular "what's wrong with her eyelines?" issue and found that the number of pics with the problem has been increasing with each release. 1_03, 1_05, 1_07, 1_08, 1_10, 1_12 2_05, 2_06, 2_12, 2_14, 2_15, 2_17, 2_20, 2_24, 2_25 3_04, 3_07, 3_08, 3_09, 3_12, 3_13, 3_14, 3_15, 3_16, 3_17 These are all of the images where I feel like the visible aim of the eyes is ... off ... from where they ought to be or otherwise exhibiting a lack of parallax in aiming so as to mutually focus upon a specific point in space less than a thousand yards away (with the eyes aimed in perfect parallel to each other). It's one of those SUBTLE things that ultimately makes a difference. Fortunately it hasn't been too much of a problem in miro's releases (until now...), but a lot of that has to do with miro deliberately picking camera angles that obscure rather than reveal eye contact with the characters while they're doing what they're doing.
