XIII and Max Payne would be the be the pinnacle examples of Visual Novel games. They are actually 3D games which tell tales through 2D cut scenes and 3D animated cut scenes. Then the actual player interactive parts are playing in First Person and Third Person perspective, still fleshing out elements of the story by the people and things that you encounter as you navigate the environment.
