Your reaction to Angel showing up was mine as well and by this point, I wasn't really a Bangel shipper per say but I really respected and accepted how bonded they were and how big their love was and for Angel to come during one of the most crucial times of Buffy's life speaks volumes. Every time I watch Angel's appearance in this episode I think about how Angel has had a tough season on his show but he dropped that all to visit Buffy and to try to give her some kind of comfort and the person she can talk to. That scene was special. Also, the scene with Spike bringing the flowers to the Summer's home was so special because Spike/Joyce did have a unique type of friendship and him not leaving a card showed that his intentions was really just to pay his respects. He didn't want his name on the card or anything, just left flowers there. Buffy and Dawn stuff was amazing and perfectly acted by Michelle and SMG. Dawn is the one grieving and feeling the pain so hard on the outside and it's Buffy who's facing it on the inside and trying to hide it because she knows her life is forever changed. She is now the one who has to take care of everything that Joyce always had under control. It was such a heartbreaking last scene and even though Buffy didn't want Joyce to be brought back that way when she heard that knock on the door, she went running. That was so sad.

The best part about this episode is the Angel appearance! I was not disappointed with your reaction to Angel/Buffy! There's so much else I want to say about this episode but it's hard to say without spoiling things!

Ashley

It's a good solace processing episode. Not exactly closure, but helps us move on from the trauma of the last.

I might be in the minority but it feels kind of out of place for Angel to show back up in Buffy at this point. It sort of feels like the show as moved past Angel and I can’t help but feel like Angel is needed back in LA with his people while seeing him here. Don’t get me wrong, it’s sweet and I’m happy the show did it but at this point I feel like everyone has moved on.

All I can say without spoiling anything is have faith in Joss Whedon, he always knows what kind of episode is needed xx

Oh, this reaction. Dear sweet Liam. I agreed with everything you said here, and I had the same reaction to Angel too. I love that he showed up. Regarding Willow, I agree that she shouldn't have done that. Bad Willow. But, at the same time, I do get why she did it. Not only did she love Joyce too, and she is also grieving, but Willow has gone through grief as well. She went deep when Oz left. It made sense that she would not want Dawn to go through that and try to stop it. But it also shows something big about Willow's personality. She doesn't respect the boundaries of magic the way Tara does. So, I don't agree with what Willow did, but I do get it. I also loved that we didn't get to see Joyce, too. I think it was far more compelling and creative, not to mention more creepy, that we didn't see her when Buffy opened the door. It's like those movies where you never see the monster face to face and only get hints as to what it looks like. It's a lot more effective sometimes, and I think that was the case here. And OMG, I loved Spike in this. His showing up to leave the flowers was wonderful. And like with Willow, I don't agree with what he did helping Dawn, but I do get it, and it shows his genuine affection for both Dawn and Buffy. Really, really well done.

Great reaction to a strong episode that was very much needed after The Body. It really highlighted how people deal with grief in different ways. I was more annoyed with Xander than Willow (who was trying to help without thinking things through). Xander acting like a bitter ex over Buffy throughout the seasons to this point always irritated me and the way he was horrid to Spike when it was clear he was being kind has always annoyed me. I also loved having Angel appear. Too many shows I’ve watched over the years don’t honour the characters by missing chances to do things like this (especially people not coming to funerals). Sure it was no doubt easier here as David was still in the fold working on Angel, but I still appreciated the inclusion, as the Angel we know would totally be there for Buffy that night. As for Emmys, I’m always most offended when they don’t even get nominated, which Sarah never was for Buffy. That’s criminal.

Useless trivia time: the demon in this episode was played by Joel Grey, who was the emcee in both the stage and screen versions of Cabaret. His daughter is Jennifer Grey, who played “Baby” in Dirty Dancing. He has Academy, Tony and Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe.

Katherine Thoreson

Whenever I think of the travesty of Sarah Michelle Gellar never winning an Emmy for Buffy, I always pull up this clip from the People's Choice Awards in 2014. (Notice one of the other nominees :D) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WTOxume9pg (I'm not sure you would want to pull this up because other video thumbnails might show up that you don't want to see. the clip itself is not spoilery, but you may still want to wait to watch it.) So many deserving but never recognized performances and shows. I totally agree about Iain De Caestecker and also Enver Gjokaj, Alan Tudyk, and so many others. I have to say that sometimes this episode makes me ugly cry even more than The Body. The way SMG just has that total emotional break down at the end of the episode....I can't. The previous episode is always a big shock to the system, and this one is reality setting in. ugh. And Angel's appearance, Spike's flowers, Giles' music.....

Some more useless trivia. Jennifer Grey is married to Clark Gregg. Whedon has also worked with both of them (in "In Your Eyes" and "The Avengers", respectively).

i completely agree that Sarah Michelle Gellar deserves an Emmy especially for this episode and the body but so does Michelle Trachtenberg i don't think she gets the credit she deserves for someone so young she was just amazing in this they r both amazing actresses and you really believe they r actually going though these emotions instead of acting its just so real its unbelievable
