I don't think Victor killed himself because he couldn't live with his own villainy; I don't think he felt remorse. I think, to paraphrase a famous villain, 'he could not live with his own failure'. He was so deranged with grief that he convinced himself it was okay to murder families in order to wipe out monsters - having his protegees abandon him and his cause, and having to face the prospect of being without a family again and having killed people for nothing - that's why I think he killed himself.
