I shot a first video of the Airpods Max immediately after unboxing them in a park yesterday. But at home I noticed that the audio I captured was not 100% representative. I am not sure what the reason is, but I think that I simply couldn't find the correct position for the headphone when wearing my mics as I cannot judge the sound that well with mics inside my ears.
In the meantime I have listened with the headphones a lot more and know exaclty how to put them on, to get the best sound. I tried recording them again today and my current results sound quite a bit better than those from yesteray. Therefore I wanted to post this short comparison in order to not mislead people when watching my video which is still being encoded (a 45 Minute walk through Vienna needs some time haha). I think the Airpods Max sound considerably better than what I recorded with the video.

Some words about this sample:

it starts with the audio recorded oudoors yesterday immediately after putting them on.

At 0:17 I switch to my recording from today, you can clearly hear a difference in treble response, which is much smoother when worn correctly (I still assume that I simply didn't find the perfect position for the headphones yesterday, another explanation could be that I didn't wear my mics correctly, but I was sure that in the meantime I managed to figure out how to insert my mics for consistent results, but maybe there is still some factor of uncertainty and I need to work a bit more on my consistency tests).

at 0:30 I switch back to the recording from yesterday and afterwards take the headphones off to talk about the change in sound when placing them differently (I just didn't know by then how to exactly place them to get the best and most representative sound).

1:07 again my recording attempt of the Airpods Max from today, which appears much closer to how I actually hear them in reality.

at 1:18 I put on my Focal Elex for comparison.

I think the general sound characteristics of the Airpods Max can be already judged quite well from this sample, especially my recording from today apears pretty realistic to me.

I will have to do more tests and also measurements before starting the next recording attempts.

Not too shabby indeed, i still prefered the smoothness of the elex here but being an wired headphone makes it a bit easier to sound better i would say, but with issues you talked some time ago unfornatly won't be anymore recommend. The airpods max might be the best sounding ones(more as wireless with anc) right out of the box, but yeah the build design and at such price i still find it very ridiculous, so it's a pity because they had potencial.

It sounds quite decent actually, it’s surprising as well but i still think that it’s overrated, at 399 it would be acceptable I’m curious to see how it would compare against the very cheap Anker Q30

Anker sounds better, but it’s not just the sound, it’s the entire experience, ANC and the transparency mode which is just amazing. Also built quality and haptics is by far the best and most premium I have ever had on a headphone. But it’s indeed too expensive, still I think as the construction and materials are so premium that the price appears justified. But I would also prefer it cheaper of course Keep in mind, a Focal Elex is also 700$ all 4 units I owned had some issue or broke within a year, or a Mr. Speaker Ether CX is 900$ and sounds like crap.

Yes it had again some imbalance, right side was noticeably louder. This is unacceptable for a product priced so high. Thus I can enjoy a cheap headphone way more if it can be brought to a high level like the Q30. I am also enjoying the AirPods Max a lot but I definitely made a mistake to take the white ones as the cushions become dirty pretty quickly
