Sony WH-1000XM4 vs Anker Soundcore Life Q30 - 370€ vs 80€

After all the hype around Sony's ANC headphones, let's check if they are really that great. To cut it short, get the Anker SoundCore Life Q30 instead: https://amzn.to/3lJZ7JU If you want to see more unbiased and unsponsored reviews with the most realistic sound samples, support me on Patreon, or simply don't ask me to review this or that: https://www.patreon.com/oluvsgadgets

Thank you so much for doing these reviews, it's literally the only source I trust when it comes to audio equipment. I recently got the Q30 for 56 € and they sound amazing considering the price!

I also love them, just the hinges are a bit too cheap and start crackling pretty soon.

Youtube comment section making us all remember why you moved things here to Patreon. Hope to see your take on the Sennheiser ANCs at some point. Good work!

I just listened to them recently again but that 3-band EQ was a bit limited. I somehow found them too hot in the 5-6khz region and also too bassheavy. But the JBL Club One (I don’t remember If it was really that one but it cost 349€) was not that bad just too much sizzle, but definitely more pleasant and natural overall than the Momentum 3 and also bass was nicely flat especially for JBL. But I doubt they have any sound controls otherwise one could bring those to a really decent level. I didn’t manage with the Momentum 3 to make them sound appealing to me.

Dumb question: is it possible that headphones like the Sony need a break-in period? Seems so surprising their sound would be so bad by default.

oluvsgadgets

Rtings has done a scientific „break-in“ test and found that there is no significant difference before/after just the pads may wear over time which will result in different sound but usually the sound becomes worse with worn pads.

Just bought the anker q30 and tried your EQ setting except 3.2kHz +4 and they sound pretty good for the price. The momentum 3 wireless is the best sounding closed back I ever heard (after a minor EQ adjustment). Can you please try them and adjust them with EQ to your liking and let us know what you think? I'll even loan you mine if it is necessary.

oluvsgadgets

I didn’t like the Momentum 3, too harsh at around 5khz and also too bassheavy: with the 3 band EQ it’s impossible to get the sound right. I liked the JBL Club One way more although it had too much treble sizzle

Maybe I missed it, but could you also test the microphone when making phone calls or voice calls in Signal/WhatsApp? For me and some of my friends this is an important factor when buying Bluetooth headphones. The quality is often awful because some headphones switch to ancient codecs for voice calls. Awful means a 300€ headphone from 2020 sounds worse than a 5€ headset from 2010. A problem though is that it also depends on the phone that you are using. Having written this, maybe all I need to check are supported codecs.

I usually have my phone in flight mode when doing videos to avoid interference with the mobile network. Neither do I like to do phone calls over a headphone let alone one with ANC, with just hearing some bad quality voice inside my head. I actually still prefer holding my phone to my ear the classic way.

Hi and thanks a lot for this. I bought the Q30 a few weeks ago directly from Soundcore for 59,99 EUR and I‘m enjoying it a lot. My settings are slightly different to yours, pushing and lowering the frequencies not that extreme than you to get a bit warmer sound. It’s really one of the best and regarding the price for me it’s hardly to believe the Sound quality. Thinking about getting the Soundcore boom as well for it also seems to be descent. Even the new soundcore 3 seems promising for the smaller speakers category. Keep on going, stay healthy and have a really enjoyable christmas time and end of the year!!!

Great video, I just wanted to ask if the Anker has a button to pause/skip songs and also how does it compare to the AKG K361 soundwise?

oluvsgadgets

Yes it has play/pause and you can control tracks by keeping the volume buttons pressed. I think with my EQ it sounds better than the K361 but this should be already obvious from the measurements.

Will you please test the Anker Motion Boom?

Haha, now 6 people in my family bought the Q30 after listening and comparing to their (more expensive) headphones xD

Hey, I´m maybe to blind to see.... Wheres your User EQ for the Q30? I´d like to follow your recommendations.

Hi Oluv! So i just bought the Wf-1000xm3. I find the sound really good so far and I've seen in one of your videos that you liked it to. I was wondering if you applied and eq tuning in the sony app to make it sound better?

Anonymous

they just dropped the price of the QC30 to $68 USD all time bargain?
