Sorry about my ugliness but I noticed too late how ugly I actually looked.

Still I hope this video can give you at least a first impression about this overly hyped Sony headphone.

Oluv, are you kidding us? You are not ugly, not even close. Don’t sorry, we are your patrons and we happy to watch your new video with your opinion, that’s why we all are here!

Sony really like to fill up its spec sheets with rubbish meaningless crap then charge you for it .lol. to me it sounds like a poor to average £80 headphone with swipe features added .

I personally really don't care how "ugly" you are in these videos, we are hear for sound not fashion ;) Also, I ordered the last edition (the XM3) when it got out... I kept it only for a few days before sending it back, I thought maybe my set was faulty, also I was really dissapointed by the fact that you cannot use LDAC with EQ...

This is very interesting to me. I've been waiting for this, as I bought the XM3's (the previous model) about 2 years ago. I liked them enough, except for, ironically, the sound, the gimmicks and the crappy EQ. I still have them and use them quite often, although I have to set the EQ to what I want it to be (pretty similar to what you set it to) to enjoy it. The thing for me is, though, I still like them, even though I never liked the sound. With my EQ it sounded fine, but nothing more than just 'fine'. The reason I kept the headphones and still use them however, is because of a certain few simple features that I havn't seen anywhere else that are perfect for me. The ANC is very good and is amongst the best. I am Dutch, and here we take our bikes absolutely everywhere (without helmets, so we can wear headphones just fine), which is where the wind-reduction mode of the XM3's and XM4's is a surprisingly well-working feature. The ANC drops a little bit (but it's definitely still there), and the wind barely affects it as it would with normal ANC. Is it worth the price for most people? Hahaha, definitely not. The sound is not more than just 'okay', and without the EQ, it's even worse. I kept them because for me personally, it just has the things I need that others don't, especially the wind-reduction mode, which I use like 1-3 hours every day. Walking when there's a breeze, or cycling, is impossible without that mode for me, especially because I keep my volume pretty low at all times (barely ever above 1/4 of the range, indoors it's at 3/16 usually, but I tend to use my Audio Technica's indoors anyways (also with EQ) as the sound, while also not amazing, is simply better). We share similar opinions about the headphones (let's just say that my XM3's are still very similar to the XM4's you tested) when it comes to the sound, yet my personal final verdict is pretty different. I still wouldn't recommend them to most people, though. Looks like I wrote an entire life story again haha. Oh well, long story short: I agree with you on most parts like the sound, the gimmicks, them being overhyped, and the crappy EQ, but because of a few features like the wind-reduction and very customizable ambient sound settings, I personally do like them in the end (still too expensive, though). Nice video! Enjoyed it all the way till the end.

Where to find this wind mode? I have not found it on the XM4. Actually I got lots of wind noise with the XM4 still better than the Anker but not by much.

Hi Olaf. If you find yourself ugly, it’s because you haven’t see me in person yet....

Well, this makes me believe that the exorbitantly priced AirPods Max are gonna sound even worse🤣.

The hype around the Sony WH 1000 XM3 and the XM4 is more around its "leading noise cancellation performance", the bunch of fonctionnality and adjustments that the app give you and its LDAC codec support. That's the main reasons why I bought an XM3 a year ago, but today, before your video came out, I had watched a ton of reviews and test to choose a headset with noise cancellation for my mom at a fair price and I finally buy the Life 30 for her for only 60 euros. 2 days after that, your video came out and I'm proud today to have seen the potential of this headset and I will definitely tune it with your latest eQ settings to make I sound even better. Thank you for your unbiased opinion and have nice day.

And it doesn't even have a headphone jack for a Hi-Fi product.

Time to return my xm4’s

Wow. While neither match the original recordings, the Sony feels so boxed in and when you switch back the Anker, the sound feels more open, lively, and liberated from that box and so much more enjoyable to listen to than the Sony. Nice review as always. I wouldn’t call the Sony bad, but it set too high a standard for itself and failed miserably, especially for the cost. Another win for Anker! Oh, and don’t bother apologizing for your appearance. We know who you are and what you look like. If you hadn’t said anything, I doubt any of us would’ve had a single thought about it. You just keep being you.

Too much pressure on the reviewers to hype the products. This is even more true for the YouTube reviewers.

That`s why I love your channel. Your fine Soundsamples against people that only talk about the performance of the Sony. Thank you Oluv too lighten me up !

I’m so mad in April 2020 I bought the Sony XB-900N for $250 and now the 1000XM4 is on sale for $250 😞

oluvsgadgets

Maybe your 900N sounds even better.... Although it shouldn’t be hard actually to sound better than the XM4

Good video Oluv, it was really needed. It irks me, watching all these reviewers claiming these premium priced noise cancelers to sound great. Your take confirmed my experience with the sonys. I'm really looking forward to your test of Momentum 3s or maybe PXC 550s if you decide to go for it, maybe Sennheiser does better? I only managed a quick test of the PXCs, but was severely dissapointed from what I heard from them. Had no time to try and eq them though. Good stuff my man :)

My sister bought her bose q30's for at around 250€, and i think with default there's not much difference but with the eq, i would say the sony wins there, but now if anker joins the chat that blows them both away, though(maybe) it will still be about time for anker get hyped and either still be great or just flaw because of wall of fame .

Very happy to see headphone reviews. Pls make more headphone reviews if possible; also consider : AKG K 553 Pro (Metal571's favorite) now on sale for C$ 170 Drop + HIFIMAN HE-5XX ($220) You look fine man, it even makes it more friendly not being behind your desk or wearing your best shirt. Thanks again for your honesty and efforts.

sony's definitely don't sound for their price. They have some bad thing happening in the lower mids. But I also have to say that I hear some peak in Anker's upper mids - lower highs. I would definitely prefer Ankers though, considering the price. It's a pity amazon.de doesn't ship them to Estonia, at least now, when they have the sale. Btw, you are not ugly, Oluv. Don't be so critical to yourself. But maybe it's part of your personality that allows you to be obsessed with different things in search of perfection. I love your attitude and your perfectionism, but we are all flawed mortal humans and cannot be perfect, in contrast to a pair of headphones :)

Thanks, Oluv! Very informative. I really hope you get your hands on the AirPods Max, as well.

I noticed that you mentioned the Sony's "sucked" on your ears - there's an "Optimizer" function which is meant to change that based on the pressure. Not sure if that will change your listening experience, but it should change the comfort experience. From the XM4 manual - "Press and hold the CUSTOM button for about 2 seconds until you hear the voice guidance say, “Optimizer start”." Obviously YMMV!

oluvsgadgets

The HE-5XX is a disappointment, also my unit has some imbalance. I also got the DT990 from Drop which I wouldn't recommend either. Not worth spending any money on them.

oluvsgadgets

this function doesn't do any difference. it just plays some weird tones but I could not hear any effect

Hi, I have a pair of these ( don't judge! ) and would love to improve their overall sound. Can you provide your rough EQ settings from the Sony app that you said made it sound acceptable? Thanks!

Anonymous

I am too searching for this information. Looks like Oluv had exchanged his XM4 at mediakart for something else so not very hopeful. Appreciate it if you can share this eq settings if you happened to have it.
