"Defying Gravity" is a well-known Broadway song from the hit musical "Wicked," which premiered in 2003. The music and lyrics were composed by Stephen Schwartz, and the musical is based on the 1995 novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire. The story is a reimagining of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and the 1939 film adaptation, offering a different perspective on the lives of the witches of Oz before Dorothy's arrival.

"Defying Gravity" is sung by the lead characters Elphaba (the future Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch), played by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, respectively, in the original Broadway production. The song takes place at the end of the first act and serves as a pivotal moment in the story. Elphaba, who has been misunderstood and ostracized due to her green skin and unique powers, decides to rise above societal expectations and embrace her true potential. Glinda, her best friend, attempts to dissuade her but eventually realizes that she cannot change Elphaba's mind.

The powerful and emotionally charged song has become an anthem for self-empowerment and overcoming obstacles, and it has been covered by numerous artists since its debut. "Defying Gravity" is widely recognized as one of the most iconic songs in modern musical theater and is often associated with the powerful vocal performances of the actresses who have played Elphaba.

Morissette is so good! And yeah, she covered the pop version of the song - which isn't my favorite version, but it still was amazing
