A lot going on here! We review the recent by-election in Amersham and Chesham, the upcoming election in Batley and Spen (both of which have yielded brain god predictions from Britain's press), review an ode to Zoom by normal shaped head haver and VC elder statesman Marc Andreesen, and speak with the FT's Jamie Powell about what appears to be yet another politically connected weird company with allegations of wrongdoing swirling around it.

Jamie's interview is abbreviated for time concerns, but we'll post the whole thing on here tomorrow!

My job is a comfortable coding job and since covid they let me work from home whenever I want and folks, I like it. Perhaps it's because this company's unique situation. Their IT systems have been made barely functional by years of relying on outsourced contractors who wrote bad code cos they knew they wouldn't be on the hook for it long-term. Management changed and the new decree was get rid of all the contractors and bring in a bunch of in-house people (me and others) who would prioritize the long-term health of the system. I'm not sure how universal or inevitable this situation is for companies that outsource core functionality. While having a culture of telecommuting certainly makes outsourcing more possible it is also nice to have available

we moved to the Cloud[TM] just by virtue of a merger and avoiding to have to deal with the IT contractor of the company we're merged into so by sheer force of luck we're ultra super ready for remote work. I used to think the cloud was shit but now I get the point. I can just login to my AWS console instead of filing a IBM support ticket and waiting 3 days!
