Something a little different... some turnarounds I did for a future reboot of Snowball (the first two issues of which, btw, were unlocked by Patrons and are available here (v1) and here (v2). 2 years ago I was deciding between working on this project or working on a different one, and I ended up going with the second one, which is Mare Internum. But it's pretty likely I'll work on SiH again after MI is over, though at the moment it's a tossup between this and another project I have on the backburner.

But! the reason for the redesigns:

  • I had no idea about volume at all when I drew the originals, and it's obvious
  • I wanted FSNZ to be cute? ish? less human, certainly. With like, cartoony/ unrealistic proportions since the story is so slapstick. I had a hell of a time going from pointy/lanky to the cute shapes, which are round, but I think it's an ok balance here
  • I have no idea how to draw horns in 3d lol. I made a crappy model out of rice (you can mush short grain rice between your fingers to make clay out of it, my mom always does this at restaurants, haha) and colored each face of it with a sharpie until I figured out wtf was going on well enough to draw it
  • and generally, make all the characters match. They didn't look like they were in the same story before, except in the sense that the art was very janky. Now they look a bit more uniform

I'll likely revisit these designs again since I've learned a lot more about character design since I made these in 2014. If you don't get it right the first time, try try again :]

PS: animated versions of Snbl and Fsnz here, because it amuses me
