"On the rail": This used to be the hardest physical labor you could be sentenced to, building the railroad through the arid interior mining lands of Caris to the ports on the coast. The project was started years ago during King Amakessar's reign and was only fully abandoned a few years ago, with far less than half of the slated lines completed. An unknown amount of people died on the rail, colloquially there are said to be a thousand souls per mile (though it is probably not that bad). But if for whatever reason you wanted to go out there, you can still find bones unburied by animals and flash floods, belonging to the unlucky prisoners who succumbed to the heat and pure exhaustion. 

Nowadays prisoners sentenced to hard labor are sent far south to logging camps. A lot of prisoners who finish their sentences there stay on to work for a (low) wage, since they're often not welcome anywhere else (see: the jerks in chapter 1)

Omg that face. S/he just has a face that projects emotions so well. Especially dry ones like "you have got to be kidding me." I'm still wondering if she could be transgender...

It's a good question. Soli is AFAB, but worldbuilding-wise I don't know if Soli has that great of an intellectual grasp on gender in general... gay folks are considered very acceptable (a holdover from hundreds of years ago, when extremely low population areas needed to retain as many people as possible to defend their towns from marauders), but men and women are still expected to conform to basic gender roles as laid out in their religious text. There are definitely trans people around but they tend to keep it to themselves... There's a trans character in the comic rn, but it's not obvious to readers, probably. (as the creator tho Soli is at least nb, even if the discourse in the world of the comic isn't up to date)
