The film technique Nina’s talking about, regarding the cut from Suletta to Elan’s face, is The Kuleshov Effect, theorized by Lev Kuleshov, one of the earliest theorists of Soviet montage filmmaking (his student Sergei Eisenstein is the most famous theorist of this kind). Also that cut y’all talked about with the slap is referred to as an L-cut, where the audio of clip 1 carries into clip 2 & motivates that cut. The opposite, a J-cut is where the sound of clip 2 begins during clip 1.
