One of a two ship class and the lead ship, Calypso was built at the time that classifications were under change. Originally built as corvettes, the class was changed to third class cruisers not long after entering service. Although armed wholly with breech-loading guns in a volume you might associate with a protected cruiser the ships were designed for long-term cruising on distant stations and so still carried a full sail rig, something that would persist in some way, shape or form on British cruisers for almost a decade after sails had been abandoned in British battleship design. Her sister, Calliope, would become famous for being the only ship to survive the Apia Cyclone, when a large contingent of German and American ships were driven ashore in the middle of a territorial dispute the Calliope had arrived to monitor.

Wonderful image Drach, thanks for sharing - those ships from that period between the mid-1860s to the late 1880s/early 1890s are very interesting, as everyone was working out how things worked.
