Steam is split into reciprocating and turbine - with a few hybrids as TITANIC with reversing steam recip on wing shafts, and direct drive turbine (added when "full away" on the centre shaft. Steamships can be split by fuel - coal fired, oil fired, and later nuclear fuelled.

Gas turbines have largely taken over from steam turbines for non-nuclear warships. Big attraction - no need for the attention-hungry boilers.
