Reference the second question, "Why was Japan was so poor at generating new aircrew?", there is much information on the Japanese training system in the book "Samurai!", by Saburo Sakai, a Japanese ace who survived to write about his experiences as a Zero pilot.

I'd recommend Jūzõ Mori's "The Miraculous Torpedo Squadron" as well. He did *not* survive, but went into a lot of depth about the training program.

Drach, I would be interested in a more in depth look into Singapore, it’s rise and fall as a naval base. How the UK planned to use it, and why it was doomed almost from the beginning to fail.

“Samurai” is unfortunately not the most reliable source. Not because of any problems with Mr. Sakai himself, but Martin Caidin added quite a bit of his own imagination to what was allegedly Sakai’s personal memoir.
